always something!

June 12th, 2020 at 12:09 AM by mumof2

Hubby has finished treatment we have 2 months before we get any results but the doc is very optomistic about the cancer being gone as hubby was a champ during the whole treatment process and tolerated it well so we will live a normal life till we are told any different.

Yesterday we got a lease renewal but only for 6 months..I guess they are sick of us asking for things to be fixed...so we decided to sign (would have like a year) but now we have to try and save and see what...

Van is Getting a Brake Job

June 11th, 2020 at 09:14 PM by Lucky Robin

We took the van into the shop today to get a new battery and an oil change and then DH mentioned, "Oh, and by the way, last time it was in, they said it would need a brake job this time." And I'm, "You didn't think to mention this to me." He forgot. Not his most shining moment, but I love him and he's a good man, just has a sucky memory. Anyway, that will be $892 before tax so I'm thinking around $982 with taxes. We have high sales taxes to make up for no state income tax.

I...

Refinancing = Saving Money

June 11th, 2020 at 07:49 PM by Amber

By refinancing my house, my mortgage rate will drop close to 4 percentage points, I will save close to $500 a month by refinancing.
Today I locked my rate in

Now that I’ve gotten rid of that credit card, I’d like to build up my emergency savings account, especially since I have no clue what is going on with this virus.

With the savings from the mortgage and the side hustle I should be able to sock away about $1200 a month, two months would put me back at the amount...

Walgreens

June 11th, 2020 at 03:08 PM by CB in the City

I went to Walgreens yesterday morning to pick up a few things that I didn't get at Sam's. I picked up more than I expected to, but since I am really trying to limit the number of shopping trips I make, I think it was a good decision. But I did forget to buy the cards! I was planning to get two Father's Day cards and a birthday card for DIL. So maybe I will try to make some, though I'm really not crafty like that, and I'm not sure I have the supplies. Or maybe I will just write...

Boys' Inheritance Plans

June 11th, 2020 at 12:50 AM by Life Balance

When FIL died at the end of January, he left most of his assets (IRA & other accounts, vehicles, etc.) to his wife. In his will he left one savings account to be split among his grandsons. Noone expected this. Our boys will each receive about $10k in the next month or so. They each inherited a gun from FIL too but they weren’t surprised because they’d been asked in past years which one they preferred. (FIL was an outdoorsman.) His will might be entertaining for another hunter...

Thought I'd say howdy!

June 10th, 2020 at 08:53 PM by DK62565

I haven't blogged for awhile because I simply don't have too much to report. Just doing stuff around here and sheltering in place. I finished everything on my initial to do list so I'm starting another. Many of the things on my original list were things I had to do outside. I don't like working outside due to allergies and I get sunburned very easily, even with sunblock. So, when I finished everything I needed to do outside, I was ready to celebrate. It included painting the shed...

Plans

June 10th, 2020 at 12:02 PM by CB in the City

After my spate of spending, it was a quiet day yesterday. There were storms in the late afternoon, which brought some welcome cooler weather. I hope it stays this way -- no AC!

After my shopping trip, I am rethinking what I have on hand for meals. This is a list off the top of my head (entrees only -- I do have sides with these):

Spaghetti with Meat Sauce
Supreme Pizza
Fettucine Alfredo w/Mushrooms
Stuffed Pepper Casserole
Tuna Salad Sandwich
Omelet
Grilled Cheese...

No Spend Day with Taquitos and Strawberry Ice Cream

June 10th, 2020 at 04:13 AM by Lucky Robin

Mumof2 wanted to know how I make homemade ice cream without an ice cream machine and I just put up a video today of how I make strawberry ice cream on my youtube channel. I think I am going to do a whole ice cream series of no machine ice cream through the summer. There are lots of yummy flavors that I want to do as we go through the summer season. Text is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N-1j8uQ4I8 and Link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N-1j8uQ4I8

I harvested more radishes from the garden today. This brings my count to:

Purple Radishes--4
Cherrybelle Radishes--1
Icicle Radishes--11

The purple radishes are quite large, I can only hold 3 in my hand, and the icicle radishes are quite a bit bigger than that. So far that makes 3 lbs of radishes. Not to mention all the radish greens, which I am eating some of and the rabbits are eating some of. All told, in organic radishes I've harvested about $10 worth if you go based on size, where one icicle radish would be equivalent to 5 regular red radishes and a purple radish would be around 2.5 regular radishes. One bunch of organic radishes is $1.29 where I live.

I made chicken taquitos for dinner tonight and they were fantastic. There were leftovers so I froze them. I baked the taquitos, but the frozen ones can just go into the deep fat fryer next time or if someone wants a quick lunch they can do a few. The recipe was very easy and I made a double batch.

Usually I want to tweak a recipe, but this came out good the first try. Although I did use garlic and fine herbs cream cheese instead of plain, so I guess I did tweak it. And I will probably add more cilantro and green onions next time, just because I couldn't really taste the small amount that was there so I guess I will tweak it some more. Oh, that's just the professional cook in me coming out. You can take the girl out of the restaurant, but... Anyway, the recipe I used is here if you are interested: Text is https://ourbestbites.com/baked-creamy-chicken-taquitos//...

Lots of Spending

June 9th, 2020 at 05:00 PM by CB in the City

This morning I made a trip to Sam's to check out the concierge service. The set-up wasn't obvious; I ended up getting out of the car and standing in line with regular shoppers and had to ask an employee -- when I found one -- where the concierge line was. After I got in the right place, in my car, it took about an hour to go through. Next time I will come later, because I noticed everyone lined up at 7 and there was no one at 8.

Several things to know if you're going to do...

Going Grey

June 9th, 2020 at 02:02 AM by Life Balance

In our county hair salons aren’t yet open. I haven’t been covering my grey hair growth except with a temporary solution when I’m forced to do a video conference. I have to say I’m starting to like the grey and I’m seriously thinking of keeping it. My hair is now naturally salt & pepper with the salt/pepper proportions different in some places.

Once salons open I may even ask my hairdresser to dye it all grey and then I’ll just have some dark roots but less over...

Smallsteps

the 8th month itch

June 8th, 2020 at 09:29 PM by Smallsteps

My temp assignments if they are long term at least are set to expire after 9 months. I always seem to get a 8th month itch of going back and forth in trying to see IF I want to stay.

My question for all those out there what helps you make up your mind?

When you get a new job how long is it before you decide ... this is not for me or i will stay until something better comes along etc.

What are other criteria you consider... company/ schedule/ commute ?

I believe...

last month spending and update Net worth

June 8th, 2020 at 05:27 PM by LivingAlmostLarge

So last month we went away for 3 days and spent $59.29 on gas to get there and backs. Otherwise we filled before we left for $24.72 for all the driving we did for the month. Our hotel $547.88 for 2 nights. And we spent $168.47 for take out. Very nice weekend.

Otherwise we spent $874.23 on groceries, below our normal $1200 we've been averaging for the past 2 months. I suspect June it'll be higher because I'm eating so much more fruits and veggies. We still spent $421.92...

Wisdom Teeth Extracted

June 8th, 2020 at 01:00 PM by Creditcardfree

Our youngest daughter had her four wisdom teeth extracted last week under anesthesia. Our insurance covered all but the anesthesia, so our portion was $651. I think this is in line with what we paid for our older daughter. She has breezed through recovery with very minimal pain medication. The opioid med made her nauseous, so I picked up anti nausea medication which she took once. And after that first day she has taken just three ibuprofen. Swelling continues to go down each day....

Another Birthday

June 8th, 2020 at 11:33 AM by CB in the City

My other DIL is also having a birthday this month, so I got on HER Amazon list and picked out a couple of things which totaled $68. This morning I see that one order will be delayed. I am more than a week ahead so it may still arrive on time. I will get in touch with her on her actual birthday to see if both items have arrived. This brings variables to 21%.

I always forget that June brings two important birthdays and I never feel quite prepared. Most of the birthdays in...

Retirement Update

June 8th, 2020 at 06:46 AM by Lucky Robin

I hadn't looked at retirement since February 21st. I absolutely did not want to see how bad things were when they went into free fall after the lockdowns started. But DH told me the IRA was almost completely recovered so I thought that I would take a look at it and the 401K. The 401K is doing really well, considering. Not as well as it would have without Covid-19, but still, we're ahead after our contributions and employer contributions by $763.04 of just profit. The IRA has...

End of Month Review

June 7th, 2020 at 09:23 PM by Amber

Refinancing my house and it’s estimated that I should be saving about $200 a month, I’m hoping for $300 but either way I’ll be saving.

I opted not to go with the 15 year, because I’ve created a habit of paying extra anyway even as I pay down debt. I’ve always paid extra on the principal, and given the uncertain times, it’s easier to come up with $400 than $800, if anything happens, that’s why I went with the 30. The new rate is 3 percentage points less than...

Recent Money Moves

June 7th, 2020 at 08:24 PM by Life Balance

A few weeks ago I was celebrating the arrival of unexpected money: $212 from the car insurance for cancelling Bertha (minivan that departed), $54 voluntary refund from insurance to account for the stay-at-home order, and $40 refund from the school for the pay-to-play fee since the sports season was cancelled.

I also cancelled the 0% CC that was paid off which didn’t bring in money but did simplify my financial life by removing an account.

Then it went the other way and...
