Most of us would love the opportunity to earn incomes from the comfort of our own homes but we are afraid of taking the risk of falling for a scam. Look for details and do a research. Take an informed decision. Don't pay for a job. It may take time to find the right work at home job, but proper research and knowledge will help you find a legit job.
You're very correct, there is a lot of scams out there. Although there is some trusted affiliate marketing programs also, sure you have to pay a small fee to join, but it can yield a residual income. For instance, the company I am affiliate marketing with, requires a $25 sign up fee, but you break even on your first referral (100% commission) and then from there on it's just raw profit every month. Bring in 4 people, pass 2 of them to your upline, keep 2, and those 2 both pass you up 2 each, so you're at 6 people and you signed up 4, you're already at a $150 residual income, plus instant $25 for everyone who you already have. Then those 4 that got passed up to you by your 2 people, those 4 have to pass you up 2 people each also. So you got 8 + your 6 = 14 sign ups = $350 residual income. Then those new 8 people, gotta pass you 2 each. It's called a "reverse 2-up system" which is how everyone makes money. You bring in 4 people, pass 2 up, which makes you eligible for pass ups, so once everyone gets 4 people, you get pass ups continuously and everyone has a increasing residual income. Help your downline get their 4 people, it passes you 2 people and helps them get their pass ups. Company has been around since 2009. There is many more awesome companies out there, but I like this one because it's not a MLM (multi-level marketing). There is only 1 level of people you get paid for, even though you do get pass ups, but those pass ups are from your one level.

Legitimate affiliate marketing programs don't require a sign up fee and don't usually give residual income. It sounds like you are promoting a MLM which is something I have no interest in.
I work as a psychic. Don't point fingers please, I have kids to feed. I enjoy the work and I like the people I talk to. Most actually just want a friend to share a drink with or someone to cry to when their dad died.
The pay is 18 an hour of talk time and I make about a hundred a week for 20 hours waiting for calls. I have a good system to engage clients, to retain clients, and to refund clients if they are unhappy.
I had my own psychic advice company with my husband, but it closed down in 2010. I am terrible at marketing. Start up funds dried up about half-way through launch. We remade what we spent and then it all died.
I also make money writing and illustrating books. I made a coloring book in 2009, that is so far my best selling item. In 2013 I branched out into e-books. (You can see it in my signature) It does ok. I make a little extra every month from it, but no where near enough to live off of.
I also sell used books on ebay. I usually sell antique or collectible first edition books to libraries. This has netted me 400 a week at one point. Not a lot of cash, but enough to get by. Of course, I put 4 hours a week into it that was "work" unless you consider going to book sales (can you tell how much I love books) work.
When my truck was working we collected scrap, hauled it in to the junk yard and got paid.
This year we are planting with the hopes of starting a booth at the farmer's market. This might be the most "legit" work at home job I have ever done. Starting a business selling veggies during the summer months.
There are plenty of jobs you can do from home for extra money. If you're a fast typer, you can work for companies like med-scribe that pay you for typing up medical calls. There are also ways to get hired to sub movies for websites like Amazon. Sometimes companies hire people to click on adds. A lot of people buy things in antique stores or thrift shops and flip them on ebay for a high profit. If you can craft things, people pay high amounts on etsy. Graphic design is needed for almost every professional website, as well as people who understand html coding.
Blogging is a popular way to earn online. I have not tried creating a blog to earn from it but I have read a lot of those who have earned from blogging. You can also try searching some paid to write sites if you have passion in writing. There are also sites that will pay you by completing their offers.
It just hit me that you can turn your passion into your profession and something you enjoy as a hobby suddenly becomes a source of income. Isn't it great ??!! You could go into free-lance writing, blogging, online libraries and network marketing. All up to you.
Are there any work-at-home jobs that you would consider a legitimate way to make extra money?
There are several companies that offer the ability to work from home in REAL jobs. You should research working for the following companies if you would like a legitimate job working from home:
Freelancing can bring you a good amount of money, especially if you have a specific skill like writing, graphic designing, etc. Check out Freelancer, Upwork, Genuine Jobs, Elance, there are many more too. The work is out there, you just have to find it. Happy job hunting!
You could try writing articles for people on fiverr, there are a lot of folks who make a decent income doing this, just start off slow to supliment your income and then assess whether you could take it to the next level or not
There are still legitimate work at home jobs that don't depend on the internet except for possibly advertising yourself. Depending on your talents and training, you can do bookwork for small businesses at home, tax prep. Taking the H&R tax course didn't used to be too expensive and if you are good at numbers and computer software you can do taxes with no problem for simple situations. More complicated with more experience.
Child daycare, if you are a trained nurse that is taking the time off to raise your own child, you might even want to be available to take 'sick' kids that can't go to regular daycare and charge more than the going rate for regular day care. I had a friend that was divorced and left with three small children and she had to work. I don't know what was with her day care worker but if the kids had a temp of something like 99 or above they got sent home and she would lose a day's work. I volunteered to help her out several times and the kids were never sick. It seemed like her regular day care person hated kids and so would pull out the thermometer every day and check all the kids temps whether they were symptomatic or not.
If you are a good cook and keep a pristine kitchen (depending on state laws) you could make cookies, brownies, meals, etc. I would pay right now for someone to use MY cookie recipe to make me some chocolate chip/walnut cookies and a pan of brownies as well. While I am an excellent cook, I don't have the stamina to cook or bake much, much less deal with the leftover mess. Which brings me to another suggestion that if you can leave you home to work, but still work around your schedule, cleaning for other people pays well. Most cleaners won't deal with dirty dishes. My cleaning lady (a lovely Mennonite woman) understands that is my top priority. I pay her $20/hour. Dependable, honest, trustworthy, non-smoking cleaning people are HARD to find.
Tutoring students who don't seem to be getting much of an education in our schools anymore, giving music lessons, shopping/drug store runs for the elderly or disabled who can't get their groceries over even better overworked corporate working women that don't have time for grocery shopping, my son thankfully still makes himself available at least every other Saturday to help me out on that score! It all comes down to, what can I do that others might not be able to do anymore and would pay to get help with? That is how you earn money from home or working out from your home. You set your hours. You set your rate of pay. If you like doing hair but can't do it at a beauty parlor because you aren't licensed, doesn't mean that you can't help people wash their hair, blow it dry/curl it and then comb it out would be a blessing. Yet another thing I could use help with. Obviously without being a beautician you can't do perms or hair color, but a simple washing and conditioner is the same as what you already do for yourself (I assume). In college I got paid to grandpa sit for a woman who still had an elderly father at home and she didn't like leaving him alone at night. I got to sit on the couch and watch TV and chat with the gentleman and got paid for it. 45 years ago college kids didn't have easy access to TV.
The thing is there are lots of ideas for things you could do and you don't have to do just one, but several according to your skills, etc. I read a book once that said it is easier to make $100 10 different ways than to make $1000 one way. Everyone has some talent for something. That is why you see the handicap working as bag boys and restaurant cleaners that take pride in their work. If they can do it with lower mental faculties then someone normal certainly should as well.
Just wanted to remind you that not everything has to be earned on line!
