I've spent some time yesterday and today organizing everything to file taxes. I never do it this early but we need to file early so that we can file the FAFSA since DD is starting college in the fall. I don't really expect to get any need-based aid but there are some things we can't get unless we file FAFSA. There's one state merit grant that DD was told she is eligible for and even though it is merit-based, you must do the FAFSA in order to collect it.
The bad thing is we are going to have a large tax bill this year. One of our taxable mutual funds had a substantial capital gains distribution. I also earned a lot more on my medical surveys. Between those two things, we'll probably owe close to 5K - ouch. I did increase my withholding in 2013 but I didn't do that until around June so I only paid in about $1,300 extra, not nearly enough to cover what we'll owe.
