  • combining insurance (auto and home)

    1. i'm having a hard time finding companies that offer to combine both home and auto insurance. does anyone know specifically which companies offer discounts to lump home and auto (or life, health etc...) insurance?
    2. how does the business model for these combined multiline insurance contracts work? how are they able to offer a discount for the same coverage when the actuary #s are the same?

Do you have state farm near you? They are awesome and will combine many times of insurances.

Ours is combined with USAA. You have to be a member to use their insurance but if you can get a membership they have great rates.

My current and previous insurance companies offer that. Although Geico, my previous one, offered their homeowners through a third party, Travellers.

This is my company. I have home, multiple autos, and boat ins. through them and they do give a nice discount for that. I've also never had problems when filing a claim which is a very nice thing.

I can only guess that the discount basically a reward for loyalty. I'm sure they are the financial winner in the end. Have you ever known an insurance company that wasn't(okay, AIG and Hartford aside )

State Farm - been with them for 15 years - no one can beat their loyalty discount either - if you stick with them a while. Big discounts for sticking with them many years and insuring multiple items.

I heaR State Farm is expensive, but we have never been quoted anything lower, shopping around.

It is certainly worth consideration, however, don't simply assume that combining your auto and homeowners insurance with the same insurer is the best way to go. Often, the insurers who offer the most in way of discounts are the ones who have the most room to do so due to their pricing.

You may find the best deal by having both with one insurer but you also may find it better to have your auto insurance with one and your homeowners with another. Shopping around is the only way to know for certain.

Like MM, I've been with State Farm for 15 years or more. At that time you couldn't click around the internet to find rates. Presumably, you can do this now. I called every company around and State Farm had them beat. It could be different nowadays as I haven't checked.

I will restate that it's important to check their reputation for handling claims(more important than saving a few bucks). State Farm and others I'm sure were really put to the test by the Gulf coast hurricanes of the last few years(especially Katrina). How they handled this stuff should be a great indicator of the kind of company they are.

My wife and I use Allstate for all of our insurance needs and have been very pleased with them.

You should also bear in mind that insurance company coverage and pricing varies by state. What may be a good insurer to use in Georgia could be a lousy choice in Idaho.

The only way to really know is to shop around. Online quotes help. Also, consider an independent agent who can do some 'shopping' for you; compare those rates and companies with some of the majors like Allstate, State Farm, etc. and see what you find. Usually, it will become fairly evident what your best options are, all things considered.

well, a quick google search of both State Farm and Allstate against Katrina results in negative reviews.

I haven't read the reviews but am not surprised about negative comments. This had to really put a burden on both as large insurers.
