  • Layoff Prep (Us too)

    Hi all,

Hubby's company is going through some major lay-offs. Per the media it may be "late fall". I'm very glad we have some time to prepare but I am still nervous.

I read the other post and found all hints helpful but I'm wondering if anyone has more financial advice? I have an OOC electric bill (about $130/month for 2 adults) but I've posted and read on here before and can't get it lower. Oil heat & hot water. Live in MA, 2 adults, 2 cats and 2 dogs. We are 31 and 39 (if that matters).

Do you think I should adjust my withholdings and/or 401k contributions and ESPP now or wait and see if dh is picked as part of the lay off? I'm the one who handles the finances and shopping so I'm trying to do what I can do now...

Here's the "easy" things I have done so far:

Cancelled Tivo (-$7) month (but when I called they gave me 4 months free)

    Cancelled Netflix ($-16) month

Cancelled dh's Employee stock purchase (3%/month)

Decreased dh's 401k down to 5% (need 5% for company match)

    Cancelled dh's Roth IRA (2%/month)

Clipped Coupons and dusted off coupon binder LOL

    Rotated/cleaned food/health&beauty&cleaning stockpile

Unplugged everything expect tv’s and clocks

As soon as Entourage is over (2 or 3 weeks) I’ll decrease our cable package. But, it’s cable/internet/house phone for $140/month now. Will probably be able to get it down to about $120/month.

We can get all health/dental/eye insurances plus the pre-tax medical thru my job if he does get laid off as that would be a “qualifying event”.

    TIA

It sounds like you have a good plan in place. I would sock any of those savings into your saving account.

Can you husband get a part-time job right now to help increase the emergency saving fund.

I wouldn't drop your retirement savings at all right now.

Sorry to hear about the impending changes. I answered in the other post about some of the things I did when I was downsized.

I forgot to mention that I stopped 401k contributions prior to receiving my severance payout. I saved thousands of dollars as the severance was substantial.
