  • Online Savings for Minors

I am interested in opening up an online savings for my grandchild (just 2 months old). It would be a joint account with me. I found ING allows the applicant to be under 18 as long as the joint applicant is over 18. But most every other online bank I looked at required the applicant to be 18. I searched this forum and found one thread about it, but it didn't sound like that person was finding they would not be able to open the account. I want to use a bank other than ING because her parents will be opening her up an account there and I don't want to confuse things by having two accounts for her in one place. Anybody know if there is a way to open up an online bank account for a minor in an online bank other than ING?

    Thanks.

I'm not sure why you would be confusing things by using ING? I have my own account at ING, and I am the secondary account owner for both of my minor childrens' accounts. It makes things pretty simple actually -- plus I earned additional sign-up bonuses by "referring" them.

ING allows you to put 'nicknames' on the accounts, so if your worried about getting the parents account mixed up with yours, put a 'nickname' on your so you'll be able to tell them apart.

WAMU (Washington Mutual) offers and online account with 3.30%. They also let you make deposits into it at their branches. However, I think you have to have a checking account with them though. No fees though. You may want to check that out.

That wamu thing sounds good... it would cut back on the waiting time that I experience with ING
