  • historical homes...investment or mistake?

hi guys, I am not sure if this is applicable to this forum, but it does involve monetary risk, so here goes: Is buying a historical home an investment or a mistake?
My FH and I are planning to move to Savannah GA and we love the historical homes. Many of them are being restored/remodeled and are popular residences.
My concern is, how long is a house supposed to last? If it has stood 100 years, what are the chances it will stand another 100 yrs? I picture that 100 yrs from today, the new construction homes being built now will be considered historical, and my 1890 house will be a pile of dust. Any input? Are these fears justified?

I think it is more likely that the cheap crap they build today will be a dust pile long before those current historic homes. I grew up in Philadelphia and there are still tons of homes built in the 1700s that are in great shape and still occupied.

I think historical homes are a great investment! As long as you take care of them I can see them lasting a long time. Also, with most historical buildings, you are eligible for tax abatements (not having to pay taxes for 3, 5, 10, etc years) on any improvements you do to the building so that is always a plus!
