  • I was never refuded for an expensive ebay purchase

    Hi-
I bought an iphone 11 for $530 on ebay and decided to return it. I used the UPS label provided and mailed it back within the allotted time. They never refunded my money and when I asked about it they said they didn't get the phone. I provided the tracking # and the confirmation from UPS that it had arrived, and they said they have a claims manager looking into it but it's been a while (over a week since last message). What should I do? File something with ebay? Try to call the business first?

If it’s been a week, I’d reach out to them again.

I'd agree with going the nice route first. Contact the seller again. If you don't get a prompt response (remember, It is Friday...) then I'd prepare to file a claim through eBay. Or call my credit card company and dispute the charge through them.
        History will judge the complicit.

It's also a holiday weekend so a lot of places may be closed on Monday.

It's often been my experience that there is a lag between when a returned item arrives (as per the tracking) and when it actually gets processed. This is especially true on ebay because many sellers are just little guys like you and me. You may not be dealing with some big company. The "returns department" may well be their dining room table and the "processing specialist" might be their teenager.

If no response by the middle to end of next week, file the claim with ebay.

Thanks everyone- it's actually been weeks since they "closed" my return claiming they never got the phone, and I've had some sparse back and forth with them. They have 1000s of sales and I've bought phones from them before. I'm going to Florida tomorrow and back March 1st, I'll file a claim with ebay if no progress by then.

In that case, I’d file the claim right away. Don’t wait two more weeks at this point.

Ebay always sides with the buyer so you'll eventually get your money back. It's annoying though to have to fight for a refund.

Yes- I never got around to this until today. I couldn't find a phone # for the seller/store so I called ebay and the first person I spoke with told me that because the time to return the phone had closed I would need to try to get the refund from the seller. In response I started kinda yelling (so not like me, but it's a lot of money!) and asked to talk to a manager. The manager came on the phone after about a 5 minute hold and immediately issued a refund.

That's great. Glad it got resolved in your favor. And a good reminder to elevate issues to supervisors or managers when front line customer service people aren't able to help. The managers generally have much more flexibility when it comes to customer recovery.
