  • Locast has suspended service

When we cut out cable last year, one thing we did to replace it was sign up for Locast to get our local channels. Great service and a non-profit behind it. Well, apparently they just lost some big lawsuit. First they said they were going to stop interrupting shows to ask for donations. We were fine with that since we already donate so we don't see those fundraising interruptions. Yesterday, though, they said they were shutting down immediately.

Hopefully they will successfully appeal the decision and be able to start broadcasting again but for now we've lost our local channels except for a couple that are included in our Sling service. I'm going to search around this weekend to see if any other providers are out there and still operating. There is one, LocalBTV, that we also have an account with but for whatever reason, they don't carry our local ABC affiliate and that's the local channel we watch the most.

I don't remember why you decided against using an antenna when you cut the cable cord, but is that something you'll reconsider?

We got an antenna first. No matter where we put it, the reception just wasn’t great and it was very inconsistent. It would be crystal clear one day and unusable the next. We had to keep moving it around. We finally gave up.

A few folks have recommended a larger indoor antenna that they put in their attic. I might look into that.

With the new house we're building, we had them run electricity into the attic and install an outlet on the post that was most logical for antenna installation. I'll try to remember to post an update to let the forum know how it goes once we're in the house and have actually installed the thing.

In our last house, we had an exterior antenna that wasn't very noticeable because it was just one horizontal piece and we hung it in front of our gutter so it sort of blended in. We loved it.

I think 6ABC streams on Roku channel. Assuming you are talking about Action News

I talked to a guy at Best Buy about this once.
You might need two antennas and a device to link them together.
The conversation got pretty techy, but there are ways to pull in digital over the air signals if you are having problems.
