  • Working on Christmas?

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! Just curious if anyone is working today and checking the forums.

I normally don't work on Sundays, but volunteered for the extra day off to use next year. Our family does the main celebrating on Christmas Eve with relatives. That allows my siblings with their families and in-laws to celebrate today, instead of trying to rush to multiple gatherings.

Same goes for Thanksgiving, but we celebrate with our family on Black Friday, instead of shopping. My siblings and their in-laws are for that Thursday.

So I don't mind volunteering those days as I try to get caught up on work.

Friend of mine works at a grocery store today. Making good money with triple time, $65/hr but he has no life. Works every holiday because of the double/triple time and the fact that nobody volunteers

I guess you call it work, I'm getting ready to drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to make some money (I hope, lol).

Agreed! Not a big gambler, but I joke to my friends when in Vegas that I'm going to work in Downtown ($3 crap tables).

I'm working right now; relatives are visiting downstairs and I'm here reviewing some documents. It is actually nice to work as I appreciate the peace and quiet.

It's been a long Christmas long weekend for me. Almost glad that it is almost over.

Gamblers don't call it "work". The PC term is "entertainment". You'd pay money to watch a movie; you'd pay money to go to a concert; you'd pay money to ski; same with gambling. Entertainment.

I could have worked yesterday and today as there were openings and they were looking for coverage but I declined. Even though we don't celebrate Christmas, we still had plans for both days. We had a family get together yesterday for Chanukah and my wife and daughter and I have a tradition of seeing a movie and getting Chinese food on Christmas day. I didn't want to give up either of those things. I also didn't want to deal with the crazies who tend to show up on the holiday .

BTW, I don't like to gamble because I don't like to support that industry. I used to love gambling when I was a kid (even memorized the basic strategy just for fun and was pretty good at poker), but once I'm older, I realized that gmbling isn't a good thing. It weakens family values and prays on the desperate; so I decided to not like it.

The only times I gamble is when wife wants to and she likes me to accompany her mainly to watch for wrong payouts (which I caught a few times at Fiesta, before being bought by the station casinos) and what her best moves should be.

I'd recommend new gamblers learn more about the industry then decide whether to even bother continuing -- there are lots of better entertainment IMHO.

I agree. We always count gambling as entertainment. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose, but as long as we go in with a set amount of money, it's really no different than us spending $300 to see a Broadway show for a couple of hours.

For this year, I worked right on through the Thanksgiving holiday, and the only reason I'm off Christmas Day is because my store will be closed that day. Otherwise, it's most likely that I would've had to work…

My wife worked both Thanksgiving and Christmas, serving lunch at the military dining facility that she oversees. I haven't worked the holidays this year, but I was deployed overseas for the holidays 2 of the last 4 years. Currently, I serve a standby/alert role & can/have been/will continue to be called in literally at any time of the day or night, regardless of holidays, weekends, leave, or otherwise.

My father is a different story.... He intentionally works almost every holiday & long weekend. He's a forecaster at the national hurricane center in Miami, and mostly lives on his own (his wife/my step-mother lives much of the year in Michigan for business & climate reasons). So he happily takes the watch shifts that nobody else wants, because he does better to be busy & productive. I think he gets extra pay for working the holidays as well, but that's not a big influence for him.

Anyone who is interested to know about how much I made for Christmas in Las Vegas, I came back home with the same amount of money that I took there. Not profitable but it beats losing money.

I'll be happy to oblige but I don't have time today but check back tonight and I'll report on my gamboling.

I call that a successful trip for sure. You got a bunch of free entertainment, maybe had a free drink or two, and earned reward points that you'll use for free meals or free hotel stays or whatever. We don't gamble regularly but when we did, I definitely factored in the money saved from the perks.
