Do you tip your barber and for carryout?

My barber's normal price now is $15/haircut but since I was one of his first customers when he opened his shop he grandfathered me in to the price when his shop first opened ($12 about 8 years ago). I give him a $3 tip so I pay $15 anyway.

I never tip on carryout. Tipping is strictly for service. Since I am calling and then picking it up I am taking care of the service myself. I don't consider the cooking and prepping my food into containers service. To me those are costs that restaurants build into the price of the food.

I get haircut + shampoo+ wax (yes Wax eyebrow) for $17 + $3 tip = $20 a month.

Usually wax every 3 months. I average about $10-$13 without the wax

I've mostly switched to cutting my own hair, but my barber charges $12 for a cut, shampoo, and razor clean up (truly a steal). I would always tip $2.

As for take out, I almost never tip. As stated, tips are for personal service, not standing behind a counter & taking my order.

I own three salons, and tips are a big part of our stylists' income. $2-5 is the norm.

I cut my own hair but years ago when I used to go have it cut, I tipped a couple of dollars.

No, I don't tip for pick up or counter service food even though many places have a big old TIP jar on the counter. As pflyers85 said, tipping is for service. At those places, no service is provided.

The one place where I'm always a bit torn on what to do is places where I order at the counter and sit down to wait for my food and rather than calling me up to get it, someone brings it out to me. That's literally all they did. I ordered it. I paid for it at the register. I disposed of the trash myself. Does it warrant a tip because they walked 10 feet to bring it to my table?

my hair guy has been with me through thick and thin, he used to charge me $20 for all three of us to get haircuts. Now he charges me $15 for a cut and color! So I tip him at least 25%

I do not tip if I am carrying out food, I tip for delivery

Ok, I am starting to feel better about not tipping for carry out. Thing is if I go to a place like OEC Japanese or any Oriental restaurant I feel like I offend them if I don't tip them.

Papa Johns - the staff are so young I know they probably don't have any money working that kind of job, so I tip a dollar, but not certain they get the tip money if added to receipt, I sure hope they do. In my budget sheet, I will take receipt and mark it $12.96 for the pizza and $1 to my charity/giving category. But if they don't get it, I will stop. Maybe next time I will ask them about it.

I saw an article about one of my heroes Drew Brees for not leaving a big tip for a large carryout order and there was debate in the comment section about it.

If it's the scenario where waiter drops off order at table that was ordered at register and requires me to drop off trash on way out I may or may not tip a dollar. Usually the waiter or waitress will come by to top off tea and I feel since they did that and checked on me they earned the dollar for it, I don't know what to think.

Lastly with my Asian barber - it's a Seinfeld like situation where I feel like now that I have been tipping her $5 there's no going back $2.

Sure. If the server comes back, checks on me, buses the table, etc. then I definitely tip. Otherwise I generally don't.

I tip my barber.
One pizza place has a bunch of young kids working there and a tip jar on the counter. leave them a tip, but not may other carryout places.
I also tip the guys at the car wash.

Do you tip when you pick up carryout food? I usually order a Papa Johns pizza about once per week. I always pick up, and add a tip in the total, usually just a dollar, and I do the same for when I pick up OEC Japanese. Not sure what the tip protocol is for carryout food. Thoughts?

I tip for hair cuts.
I don't tip for takeouts.

Absolutely. As a matter of fact, you should be tipping more. This stylist/owner has been successful enough to run their own business. Expertise, education, and experience is why you are requesting service from them.

I cannot give you an estimate on how much to tip her because there are many factors involved such as the type of service you are getting, any challenges your hair may be giving to the stylist, the price point of the services offered, and so on.

If you trust this person, I would let them know that you want to give a fair and honest tip but you aren't aware of the proper amount. But I am positive that the owner is more than thrilled that you keep coming back to them for salon services.
