  • Do you own a safe?

Can anyone recommend a good quality safe. I need a place to keep some personal items safe, including something fire proof. I don't own a gun but I was told a safe built for a gun may be what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have any suggestions please? Thank you all

A good gun safe can be expensive - you are looking at least 400 to 800 for a safe than can hold a long arm.

What are your primary needs? We've always had a 'home' safe, water proof to primarily holds legal documents, $ 250. emergency cash, the type of jewelry requiring insurance and easily bolts to a shelf and back wall of a cupboard. They aren't very expensive and I notice they go on sale regularly. These are 'fire safe' but not fire proof. A gun safe takes considerable planning, delivery, home location planning, and are expensive .

I suggest you first decide where to put the safe that meets your needs. DH initially bolted our safe to the back, dark corner of his closet, bolted to floor and wall. What a pain! You needed a powerful flashlight and lie on your belly, moving boots/shoes out the way to access the safe either adding or locating something needed. Caused lots of aggro, placed far more accessible when we moved to house #2.

These are all the items we need a home safe for.

What's the difference between fire safe and fire proof?
        Thanks

I suspect it's water proof, safe in most situations but would not remain undamaged in a fire like the one in Ft.McMurray that we've recently watched on TV news, flattening neighbourhoods. You need to read the details on the box. They are much heavier than they look, I think close to 20 lbs. I suggest starting with discounters like surplus salvage home improvement, Re-Store or Big Lots type stores. If that doesn't work, Home Depot, Lowe's, Staples, Office Depot. Check CL or local popular on lines sale page as people will sell smaller units if they plan to store fire arms which have legal, storage parameters.

According to a demonstration on Mythbusters, safes are not generally waterproof. (You'd need to see whether or not it has tight sealing gaskets.)

The anchoring of the safe is important; if not secure, thieves can carry off your safe without opening it. If you opt for a small mobile safe, you need to hide it well.

Get a good one. A big one that someone can't pick up and carry away. Mine is 500lbs and bolted to the basement floor.

This is one of those things not to be cheap with. be prepared to spend a little more up front.

We don't have a safe as we really don't have anything of that much value to protect. We do have a lock box that is fire resistant. We keep our passports, car titles, stock certificates, etc. in there.

Yes, must be bolted from inside the unit tooth b a shelf and studs of a wall with aid of a powerful, battery operated screwdriver. If you attend any of the police sponsored security seminars, they emphasis not to store anything of value in M BdRm or BathRm.

I'd get a good gun safe and as noted previously, make sure you bolt it to the floor securely. Most have shelves that can be arranged in a number of configurations. Any of the large sporting goods retailers; Bass Pro, Cabelas, Gander Mountain, Sportsman's Warehouse, etc. will have some on display to look at.
