  • What's the best thing you've ever gotten for free?

I was driving home last night and there was a table on the side of the road with a "Free" sign on it. When I stopped to take a look, it appears to ba na antique table and probably worth several hundred dollars. What's the best thing you've ever gotten for free?

Back in the day I stole an R2-D2 electronic toy still in box from the salvation army and sold it on ebay for $60 cash money.

All kinds of things. Years ago, I was a big trash picker. I used to go out every week and scavenge stuff. Some I kept for myself. A lot I sold when we went to the flea market (this was long before the internet and ebay). I'm always amazed at how wasteful people are and what they will simply throw away because they are done with it.

Recently my wife found a lamp on the sidewalk outside an apartment building. We got a shade for it and use it in our living room. the shade was not free but only a few dollars. The lamp has a really nice hand painted ceramic base and working socket which was free.

My current car. It was an unexpected gift from a relative complete with low miles and excellent maintenance. It also happens to be good on gas and keeps my insurance low.

My little dog. Beside bringing us lots of joy to us he has brought joy to more residents of the area nursing homes than I can count over the last 8 years. There is nothing better than seeing happiness.

We won a car a couple years ago. While it was free, we did have to pay some tax on it. After all, NY needs its cut for some reason as an asset transfers from one party to another.

True story, we won a car one time too. Wife and I were at the dealership on a Saturday morning taking delivery on a new van we'd just purchased. Salesman said he put our name in the drawing for a used car they were giving away that morning as a promotional.

The sales floor was full of people you could tell desperately needed a car, and when they pulled the winner our name was drawn. Seeing how we were picking up a new car, I told the salesman we sure didn't need it as bad as other folks there, so he suggests we sell it to one of them cheap. Thought for a second and told him to pull another name, as there were other folks that needed that car a lot worse than us. Hope we helped somebody out there.
