I'm going to be alone for the first time on Christmas. I usually go to visit my family, but it wasn't in the budget this year. I'm fairly new to this town (Kansas City) and the few friends I do have will all be out of town. Finding myself alone on Christmas, I'm wondering what inexpensive things I can do to entertain myself and keep from being lonely.

Do any of the movie theaters offer discount matinees? I like to go to the movies when I don't want to be alone, but don't exactly want to talk to anyone either. If you're up for more of a crowd there are usually bars or lounges open just for those who couldn't go visit family or have no family to visit. If there's a decent sized Jewish community in your area you could do a google search and see if they have any events going on. There's a Jewish museum near where I live that's open all day on Christmas, which wouldn't be a bad way to spend the day.

I suggest you volunteer to help out at one of the many soup kitchens or food distribution sites for homeless that operate daily. Call Salvation Army to ask where they need help for example. You won't feel lonely if you help someone who has nothing.

I agree with snafu. The best way to not feel alone is to not be alone. And the best way to be thankful for what you do have, rather than focusing on what you're missing, is to spend time helping those less fortunate than yourself.
And yes, movies are always a good choice.Steve
