Hmmm, I personally don't remember cash for Christmas. I know I was more likely to get cash for my birthday. I think I did tend to save it, but I'm sure some of it was spent.

I mostly tried to spend the money I received. It was usually given with a message like "buy yourself whatever you like," so I felt that the best way to honor the intent of the gift was to find something to spend it on. I always tried to have something specific in mind that I could tell the giver I'd buy when I received cash. I liked to save too though, so a lot of cash gifts went straight into my savings account.

One of my sets of grandparents liked to give me savings bonds. I happily saved those for many years. When I wanted to take some fun classes over the summer while I was in college, my mom encouraged me to finally cash them in and use them to pay for my summer classes. One of the classes I took was Neural Networks, which was taught by my favorite professor and was definitely one of the coolest classes I took in college.

I don't think we ever got money for Christmas. I don't recall kids from other families getting money for Christmas either. It was a different time and place, I guess.

I think at my dad's urging, I mostly got Savings Bonds from relatives in other cities which all eventually paid for university. Both grandparents sent substantial sums, I wonder if they were trying to outdo each other lol. Never thought if it. We usually got one major gift/game, coupons for movies and practical stuff like boots, mittens/scarf/hat sets. One year I got home made coupons for skating lessons which I faithfully turned in to the instructor every week. She must have thought it was a hoot because parents had to register and pay for the entire season. I still remember the year I got brand new figure skates instead of the hand-me downs or worse from the crazy skate-trade event.

I didn't celebrate Christmas but I can tell you how I handled money as a kid. It pretty well foretold how I would handle it as an adult. I saved it. I had banks for coins and little containers for bills. I would roll my pennies and stack them in my closet. When a coin bank was full, I'd count it all and put a note on top saying how much was in there. I also had one of those coin sorter banks where you dropped in a coin and it automatically stacked it with like coins. Then each stack had a lever to push if you wanted to take out a dime or a penny or a quarter. At some point, I somehow started collecting half dollars. My mom or dad found a plastic tube that held them perfectly and I set out to see how many I could get. I filled that tube (about 3 feet long) and then some. I think it was over $300.

Of course, I spent money too, but I was definitely a saver from early on.
