Do you have any special plans for New Year's Eve and Day? Does it involve a splurge or are you going to start the New Year off with frugality? What do you think is the best New Year's Eve you can get for the money?

We've never done anything for New Year's Eve. The last few years my city has put together an alcohol free outdoor festival that seems to be loads of fun, and maybe we should do that.
For New Year's Day, we often cook black-eyed peas which seems to be an old tradition, with the peas in some way representing coins, thus prosperity in the coming year. Personally, I think it was really just a way for the poor who had no choice but to eat a lot of beans to give themselves some optimism. Hey, if you have anything at all to eat, the future is secured for another day, right?
New Year's 2013 our local grocery did not have black-eyed peas on the shelf. A little investigation showed me that it was probably because of the Texas drought in summer 2012, Texas being where most black-eyed peas in the US are grown."There is some ontological doubt as to whether it may even be possible in principle to nail down these things in the universe we're given to study." --text msg from my kid

I gave up going out & paying those HIGHLY inflated prices for bad food, bad drinks and worse service back in my mid-20's. For MANY years I had an open house appx 9 pm - 1:30 am. Was no more out of pocket than some bad meal/entertainment would have cost me. It has been a number of years since I have done that.
This year especially I am staying home. Metro Chicago is forecast to get 3-6 inches of snow between 4 pm NYE and NYD. Don't need/want to battle bad weather, bad roads and DUI drivers.

We are at Disney World for NYE staying in our timeshare. We haven't firmed up our plans for this evening, yet.. We were over at the Magic Kingdom yesterday and it was pretty crowded (it will be even more crowded tonight
). I love the fireworks and they have some extra special displays for NYE. They always preview the NYE fireworks show at the magic kingdom the night before NYE, so last night's show was really awesome. This year's room assignment gives us a perfect view of the fireworks at the MK.
Today's plan might be a little ambitious: We have fast passes for Disney Hollywood studios for early afternoon. We have early dinner ressies at the Polynesian resort. After dinner, we could walk over to the TTC and catch the monorail to EPCOT to see the early fireworks show there and then walk around EPCOT a bit (they usually have DJ's set up around the park). Finally, catch the monorail back to our resort (or, monorail/ferry) and watch the fireworks from our resort at 10 mins to midnight. The big unknown is if we get shut out of the parks because they have reached capacity. The other unknown is if we can have the stamina. (We slept in this morning, so maybe....
)
This is a not a frugal outing, but most expenses have already been covered. We already purchased our annual passes (from a previous visit) and our room was paid for over the year (with our dues)--and we prepaid our meals with the dining plan. DH and I are using award travel tickets (for our airline travel) and DS is driving us around in his car. I am hoping to keep any misc additional expenses to less than $200 (for our entire stay) and I have Disney gift cards to cover that expense. (We don't generally buy a lot of souvenirs.)

We will be ringing in the new year with friends at a small house party nearby. I'm not positive about our New Year's Day plans. We may go to the Jersey shore as the arcade that we frequent has a free buffet for their club members. It depends on the weather if we go.Steve

This year my husband and I invited some friends over to play board games on New Years Eve. The only cost will be in providing some snacks and drinks. Other than the fact that there will be a toast at midnight, it shouldn't be too different than any other night hanging out with friends.
On New Years Day, my parents are coming over to help us put up a back splash in the kitchen. This is a project we've been putting off for several months, and when my parents asked what I wanted for Christmas, I told them I wanted help with it. New Years Day just happened to be a day when my parents and my husband and I were all off work. Hopefully, none of us will be too tired after staying up late the night before.
