  • College "Dorm Registry"--retail sales

Last month I read about a registry for a retirement party. This month it is a registry to outfit one's college dorm room. The idea comes from JC Penney. I think it might be okay to pass around for that already existing gift-giving occasion of high school graduation. But for the additional occasion of leaving for school? What do you think?

I think it meshes perfectly with graduation. Rather than giving some item the kid doesn't want or need, give something that will actually be useful. I wouldn't have a problem with that, so I think I'd prefer to just write a check.

It would make sense if they combined it with graduation. I got a lot of nice gifts when I graduated but none particularly useful (jewelry, etc.).

Speaking of registries, I am having a housewarming party in a couple weeks. A friend that I invited told me I needed to register so people would know what to buy me. I was really surprised at her suggestion. It never crossed my mind to register for a housewarming party and I do not intend to make a registry for my party. Previously, I had only heard of people registering for weddings.

It is interesting how common registries are becoming- any excuse to get a gift I suppose.

I think many people felt the same as you did with your graduation gifts - nice but not particularly useful. If you are going to get gifts, wouldn't it be nice to get things you actually want and/or need rather than a bunch of things you'll end up returning, giving away or selling at the next yard sale?
