  • free healthcare in Boston?

I was reading the local paper (Detroit News) and someone made mention of there being free heathcare in Boston in a reader letter they printed, and a woman moving there for it. Is this true?

Free as in all the treatment or only the checkup? I've only heard here.

There's a book called The Cheap Bastard's Guide to Boston. If you look it up on Amazon and then use the Search Inside the Book feature, search on "medical." They have a whole section on free and low-cost medical care.

Page 154-6 has a list of health centers. From page 154, "Boston is home to more than two dozen community health centers. In fact, the very first health center in the country opened in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood in 1965." Also see on page 153-4 writeup on Boston Medical Center, which gives lots of free care and administers a low-cost insurance plan called HealthNet.

The book is probably worthwhile to buy if you live in or near Boston, for more than just this. We have the New York Cheap Bastard guide at our library, and it's great. Just wish they had one for Philly!

Access to public free health clincs and free health insurance to erase fears of losing assets to a medical condition are quite different things.
