  • Terminology for first-time users

    I've recently joined this forum, and enjoy reading the threads, but often find myself with a curious look on my face. What's a EF? Or a DH?

    Please list any financial lingo that you've seen on this site, and it's meaning, pretty please?

    Thanks!

    EF: Emergency fund
    DH: Darling Husband

      This is a good idea to have a thread where new users can ask about unfamiliar terms or abbreviations.

      I was confused at first by the family ones--DW (dear wife), DS (dear son), DS1 (oldest son), DD (dear daughter), etc.

        DS = darling son
        DD = darling daughter
        DW = darling wife

        IRA = Individual Retirement Account

            Why is the term "darling" used?

              Because 'W' by itself could mean many things- a movie, the second worse president to ever live...

                    Are you sure he's not the worst? If not, who is the worst?

                    A correction my part: D isn't always short for "Darling", but is "Dearest" to some, and maybe "Damn" to a few others. But aside from the last one, it essentially means the same thing.

                        I think in general Harding is considered the worst and Hoover is somewhere near the bottom. One of the first 10 was also considered really bad according to history channel, I think.

                        Bush may have a lower approval rating than all of the above, but I don't think such polls were available 200 years ago.

                          Wonder where Carter ranks. He seemed pretty bad in terms of his economic legacy.

                            CC = Credit Card
                            DBF = Dear Boyfriend (I see the family relationship abbreviations on quite a few forums, these are by no means unique to Savings Advice)
                            PIF = Pay/Paid in Full
                            BTW = By The Way

                              History was better to Carter than living thru his presidency (I was 8 when he left office).

                              Carter did have high inflation, but on the foreign policy side I think history has given him favorable marks.

                              Other presidents where history proved their greatness or established their legacy include Lincoln and JFK.

                              Too many Presidents try to be great while they are in office that they fail to just keep hands off and let things run themselves. Bush Jr clearly falls into this category (IMO).
