  • Do You Pick Up Pennies?

I've always been one to pick up pennies I find on the street, but yesterday when I was walking with a friend and I saw a penny on the ground, she said not to pick it up because it wasn't heads up. Apparently there is a superstition that finding a penny heads up is good luck while finding a penny tails up is bad luck.

I still picked it up. A penny is a penny and finding a penny can never be bad luck in my book.

I always pick them up. When I taught at high school I used to be able to find money every day on the ground, including nickels and dimes. But always lots of pennies. I think the kids couldn't be bothered to pick them up if they dropped them.

My grandpa taught me to always pick up pennies. He always did...and always had a full jar in the back of the closet that was "his" money that my Grandma never knew about!

I have a pot for pennies and small change and generally empty it once a year. It generally yields around £50 each year. I generally end up giving this to charity.

Or that he thought your Gran did not know about. (((hugs))) Grans are a smart lot hun, especially when they are married to the same bloke for 100's of years.

I always pick up pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar bills, placing them in CJ's piggy.

Yup... any found money is good money. As far as the superstition, I wonder where that came from. Heads up I guess is good luck, versus tails? Don't much believe in superstition.

My policy is to only pick up coins that are nickels or higher.

For me, it's a risk vs. reward issue.

When you pick up coins there's always a risk of back injury and germs. The risk is low enough that I'll take the risk for nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars. For pennies, the reward just doesn't outweight the risk.

You could have answered her on the superstition that you believe in pennies from heaven. Someone leaves you a penny in heaven that is thinking about you. This has been on Oprah several times. Yes, I pick up pennies and then thank God for the blessing. Just because someone else does not know what to do with money does not mean I do not - save it, hoard it, be frugal and wise. Otherwise you are not pennywise.

I do, but I'm working on only picking them up when the kids are with me and then letting them pick them up. There are so many people here who are living on the edge. They live in homes with no running water or electricity, so I figure they need the pennies much more than I do.

I have a good back because I'm always exercising it picking up pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters and dollars.

If it takes 3 sec to pick up 0.01, that's 0.20/ minute or $12/hr.

While it costs the mint three pennies to make a penny, it's still money. I pick up pennies at school all the time... especially in the snack lounges lol.
