  • You know you make too much money when...

First, I sheepishly admit that I have a weakness for Hollywood gossip.

I'm in shock after reading that Hilary Duff's 27-year-old hockey player boyfriend bought her a Mercedes-Benz G-class SUV (with supposed retail price of more than $100,000) for her 20th birthday. We're talking boyfriend of probably less than a year. Can you imagine receiving a $100,000 present for a 20th b-day? Or any b-day for that matter? Can you imagine buying someone a $100,000 b-day present? Especially a car that will depreciate in value? What a waste. He must have one heck of a bank account.

Thanks for listening to my vent!

I'm quite sure this is a gift she doesn't need. I would want something more personal. And cheap.....

True, but Hollywood seems to be all about one-upsmanship and having the newest and best of something without regard to whether the gift resonates with the individual personally. Sad but true.

If I was Hilary Duff, I would have asked him to give me $100,000 in cash which I think can handle better than him(buying a value depreciate liability)

That is crazy. I would have never bought someone a 100k car to begin with because what happens you breakup? Do you ask for the car back or write it off in taxes?

Lots of those hockey players are pretty broke when they retire. I wonder why, lol?

So what? To them it is just chump change. Use it and throw it away. When you have more money than you can ever spend it is no big deal.

Just be thankful you don't have millions of people scrutinizing your daily purchases.

I don't think she's short of money, she's a millionaire in her own right.

i think this kind of thing is sort of disturbing. Disturbing becus getting in the habit of this kind of wanton spending leads to a sense of entitlement.

Most celebrity news disgusts me. As a group they''re a bunch of irresponsible, wildly egomanical and ungrounded people. Good riddance.

Not all of them, mind you, but the Brittany Spears of the world.

                          I agree with Fern!
You know you have too much money when a brinks truck comes to take you to the bank everyday!

Devil's Advocate here. Let's say you make $10 million/year. A $100,000 car costs 1% of your income. If you are a mere mortal and earn $50,000/year, a $15,000 car costs 30% of your income. Which is more frivolous?

                            * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

You know, I was thinking that as well... but chose not to bring it up.

At the time of its construction, Bill Gates had one of the most expensive houses in America. However, it only constituted 1% or less of his net worth at the time. Before that, his family supposedly lived in a modest 500k house.
