they are more of a pain to clean IMO, and more of a financial comitment. Plus you have to buy the 'right' head, you can't just accept any head....so an ad for a free brush or great sale is wasted...but then most research I have read says if you do not tend to brush well, you will have better results with electric.

plus you need more counter space for them.. and when new tech comes out you are asked to replace the whole thing, noit just the brush part, whereas 'new tech' (how much can a brush change anyway?) for a standard brush can be tried rather cheap.

short answer, we had em, we prefered regular, we ditched the electric.

We had a Sonicare once. It was OK, but we didn't derive enough benefit to put up with the costs of replacement heads. When we went to get rid of it, we found that water had been seeping down below the head and into the motor base. Mold had started to grow in there. Ick!

I've asked both my old and new dentists what they thought, and they both said to buy whatever is going to motivate you to brush thoroughly and regularly. If you like SpinBrushes and you're excited to use one, more power to you. If a regular one is fine with you, that's great too.

I was just looking yesterday disgustedly at my battery operated one laying in the drawer unused. What was I thinking?? Plain old hand powered is for me!!

i've tried regular, electric and now sonicare and honestly i prefer regular toothbrushes... the only reason we tried the other ones is because people in our family bought them, didn't like them, and gave them to us with the unused extra heads...

i'd rather have a regular one any day...

Well to be honest, they are quite good, my dentist is happy with my teeth anyway!
The one big problem with all electric toothbrushes is the cost of replacing the heads and they do need to need replaced quite often (especially for me..I have braces at the moment and they wreck the bristle). But I personally prefer the electric ones to the manual ones, some have timers which ensure you are brushing your teeth for the correct period of time.

Which is better probably depends on your dental health.

My husband has a condition which causes plaque to grow really rapidly on his teeth. He used to have to go in to the dentist for really painful cleanings 4 times a year, but since he switched to a Sonicare brush he only goes in 2-3 times a year and the cleanings are much easier on him. As far as I'm concerned, reducing the pain he goes through makes the Sonicare more than worth the cost, but in fact we save money too by reducing the number of visits to the dentist.
