I would suggest that pet insurance is an unnecessary product.

The emotional appeal to pet lovers is based on the idea of some unlikely catastrophic expense.

If you own a pet or pets, you should be able to pay for check-ups and shots yourself and then, if your pet needs additional care, you should not be caught without any savings or means to provide for your animal(s).

Of course, since many people are irresponsible and have no savings of any kind, this sort of insurance may help them avoid putting such an expense on a credit card, etc., however, you will pay a premium for the privilege.

This is not just my opinion. Consumer Reports, in a recent article, stated that pet insurance was "a dog."

I've been a pet owner, of one type or another, for most of my life and I have not and will not bother with pet insurance. It is just another oversold insurance product and additional expense without solid justification.

Pet Insurance

My wife and I recently got our first cat, and I almost fell for the idea of pet insurance.

Like most pet owners, I wanted to ensure we would be able to provide the right care in case of an accident. Once we started pricing the policies and figuring the costs of routine vet visits, the numbers weren't adding up.

The thing to remember with insurance companies - they are businesses and their model is based on charging you more than they pay out. For every customer that files more in claims than they paid in premiums, a hundred more will pay more in premiums than they'll ever collect in claims.

Pet Insurance

As a professional pet sitter, I am often asked this question about whether or not Pet Insurance is a viable solution to those who may have difficulty saving enough for their pet's care during illness or injury.

Like most of you, I've looked at all of them as well - and for me, it is not worth it -- I plan on spending a certain amount on my pets each year (incl food, supplies, medical treatments) and I save that in a separate account. What I don't use carries over to the next year so that I have enough during their geriatric phase of their life to care for them without too much worry on the financial end.

It does require extensive research - I have a friend who bought into it and has not been happy - she pays $80/month per cat (she has 2) and rarely gets back what it costs her for annual exams.

My advice has and continues to be that each individual should carefully look at what they are considering - all the angles, all the details, and then look at their financial situation and make a decision from there. What works for one will not work for another.

I would rather have money put aside for petcare. The first year and last year of a pets life are traditionally the most expensive. We keep $500 for annual pet expenses (annual check up, meds, shots, license and a couple of dr. visits). I can't imagine paying $80 a month for pet insurance (I only pay $430 a year to insure 4 people)

Is pet insurance worth the cost? My dogs went through knee surgery, and even so, I'm not sure that pet insurance would have been worth it in the long run. I found this post that weighs the pros & cons of pet insurance.

Best to keep them as healthy as possible naturally. All my pets have crosse over (our last one died last spring at age 18). Loved a natural pet care book by a vet , Pitkarin. (sp??)

Unless your pet produces income for your family (Morris the Cat, Rin Tin Tin, etc) I don't believe that pet insurance is necessary. Your family budget should include an emergency fund for those kinds of accident/illnesses. Pet care should be a category to the budget just like child care, allowances, etc because it's truly a responsibility of the household. Pet insurance is expensive and usually not even collected upon. Plan for pet needs and emergencies with an emergency fund that can at least earn interest. An exception to my belief would be if your pet actively skydives recreationally.

Pet insurance can be useful. One of our cats, Archie, was adopted from the pound and came with free insurance. After bringing him home, we realized he had coughing fits, which we at first thought was a stuck hairball, but after a trip to the vet realized it was asthma. The insurance covers his asthma medication as well as health maintenance visits. If we hadn't have had the insurance, it would have costed way too much for all of his medication & doctor visits, and we would not have been able to afford to keep Archie... probably would have had to take him back to the pound, where he would've been killed if he hadn't been adopted.
Pet insurance saved our cat's life - I recommend you get it for at least the first year you have your pet, it will save you heartache in the long run!
