The DH and I have had, to say the least, a string of issues causing us to live with my in laws. There are a few stains on the Office/computer room (one of the rooms were renting) that are soda and pet stains.

Removing Cat Urine

Here's what I do for cat urine:

1. Spray the area with water
2. Sprinkle a liberal amount of bakin soda
3. Spray some more water until the baking soda is fully soaked.
4. Once the baking soda dries, it will take the urine out of the water. You can then scrape it off.
5. Repeat until dried baking soda is white in color.

I got that advise from another web site and it actually works although I do say it could be quite time-consuming.

The best thing to save on carpet cleaning is vacume, rent a steaming machine from your grocery store for a day and clean. Just my opinion.

I use sprite or bleach. Both are very powerful for cleaning blood or vomit.

Been using laundry detergent for years. I wasn't aware that it was bad for the carpet. That makes me wonder if its bad for clothes too.

Ahhh.... yes, the do it yourselfer. Equipment and what type of chemical being used is a huge factor when cleaning carpets. there is
nothing on the consumer level that can give you the type of cleaning power you need. Then there is the experience factor that only
someone in the business can provide to give you the quality of cleaning you need.

Here is a recipe that I got out of the paper:
half cup ammonia
half cup white vinegar
quarter cup baking soda
2 tablespoons liquid soap
2 quarts water

Mix and pour into spray bottle - shake will before each use.

Works pretty well.

This looks like a great solution. I usually use Simple Green for my own carpets and with a little elbow geese, it works. The key is to not let you carpets get too dirty because dirt being constantly compacted into the carpet is what destroys your carpet the most.

I just want to say thank you for sharing with us that homemade carpet cleaning solution. For me, I always use OxiClean and Hot Water. This eliminates both stains and odor and there is no lingering odor while you wait for your floor to dry as with the homemade cleaner solutions that sometimes contain vinegar and ammonia.

What kind of cleaner do you recommend for pet stains that have already set? I have a 9 month old yorkie & sometimes she pees in places I don't see until the next day... after it's already dried and had time to set in. I've tried vinegar, but it doesn't work as well, and nothing can get rid of the horrible smell!! Those "pet odor" and "pet stain" eliminators are incredibly expensive, too!

Laundry detergent is bad for carpets because it suds up (similarly do not use sudsing detergent in dishwasher). The sudsing detergents work on clothes because that is what it is designed to work with.
Personally, I use liquid versions of cleansers because undissolved powders can behave like sandblasting especially in dishwasher.

I think vinegar is good way to clean everything..
