Going on a starvation diet til year-end

October 31st, 2019 at 07:58 PM by Fern

Every month I calculate what my monthly income/expenses were, and so I've known since May that my totals were in the red, and growing worse each month.

Year-to-date, my spending has exceeded income by $8,700.

By year-end, my expenses should still come in at around $40K, give or take; my only remaining big expense this year is the 2nd payment of property taxes at over $3,000.

No, what's really caused this problem is my income is lower than projected. On most weeks, I get...

Murphy's law - the dog

October 31st, 2019 at 07:18 PM by LivingAlmostLarge

For some reasons we get very unlucky with what we spend on our pets. Perhaps the real reason is we don't pay on the front end, we adopt dogs, so instead we pay on the back end.

Anyway last year I think I mentioned our dog we adopted in October 2018, a gorgeous standard poodle, was diagnosed with immume mediated thrombocytopenia. It's an autoimmune disease where his body attacks his platelets. We've spent a fortune this year, I'm not adding it up, on medications, and going...

October 2019 retirement goal progress

October 31st, 2019 at 03:44 PM by ceejay74

Goal: $776,700 by March 2024

Current retirement balance: $506,160 (yay, we passed the half-million mark!)

September 2019 balance: $496,098

Progress since last update: $10,062

Still needed: $270,450

The new interim goal is based on getting my and NT's retirement to 4x our salaries (currently $75,120 and $62,100) by the time we turn 50 and AS's retirement values to 3x her annual income ($75,940 in 2018) by the time she turns 45.
$75,120 x 4 = $300,480
$62,100 x 4...

WDW part 2

October 30th, 2019 at 07:50 PM by LivingAlmostLarge

So then on Monday 10/14 night we checked into WDW Marriott Swan hotel. Unfortunately for us the power went out that day in half the hotel. So checking in took over 1 hour and it was a ZOO. Had we known we'd have gone to eat out before arriving at the hotel and assuming we could eat there. The restaurants were closed and we had to go to the Dolphin and it was busy.

So besides the parking how much spending did we do? We spent $64 on magic bands to make using our fastpasses...

The Insurance Money

October 30th, 2019 at 02:03 PM by CB in the City

Yesterday my agent texted me that my check (!) had been sent on the 25th and should arrive in 7 to 10 days. I fired back, what happened to quick pay, which I signed up for as my preferred payment? Apparently, I was too late in turning in my title. Though I did transfer it to the glove box on the day the car was totaled, it wasn't there when the adjustor was there, and so wasn't officially turned in until the next day, when the car was towed away.

Well, I was very unhappy,...

This has been a great week. First I got the consulting job, next I received the credit, finally, from At&t for the cable boxes, now I have a $6 credit. Now that the AT&T issue is resolved, I’ll sign back up for auto pay.

I adjusted the budget for next month, since I don’t have to pay anything for cable, super excited about this. $71 saved

That's right folks, I've gone and gotten myself a new job!! My first day will be November 14.

It's definitely going to be a challenge, with lots to learn. But ... I'm up for it!!

Just a wee bit excited.

Orlando Trip part 1

October 29th, 2019 at 03:09 PM by LivingAlmostLarge

This a multi day post. My prior posts to may were deleted. Anyway how did our trip to Orlando WDW and Universal go? Great. Very nice we had a lot of fun but didn't obviously do everything. We plan on going back but who knows when?

So our tickets were $654 to Tampa for four people and leaving Tampa $853 for a total of $1507 for tickets. Our car rental (hyundai sonata) was $200 for the week all taxes and fees. Our parking was $28 for 1 day at universal and $25 a day at disney...

More Progress on Debt Payoff

October 29th, 2019 at 02:04 PM by crazyliblady

Hi, everyone. I got a payment of $10.05 for surveys. I paid it directly to cc #1.

I also cashed out rebates of over $10.00. I will get that in a few days and send it also.

Friday is my next payday and I still have money in checking.

I definitely feel blessed right now.

Happy dishwasher update

October 29th, 2019 at 02:01 PM by Steve

The 2nd attempt at getting our dishwasher installed was yesterday afternoon. A different crew from a different company came out and they were amazing! They were friendly and understanding and professional and skilled. They were shocked that the other crew hadn't even made any attempt.

They pulled out the old dishwasher easily (the other guy said he might not be able to get it out) and proceeded to install the new one like it was nothing. They appreciated that we were educated...

Another Day of Waiting

October 29th, 2019 at 02:00 PM by CB in the City

No money yet. Yesterday I sent a text to the adjuster I was working with asking when, but he has not answered yet.

I have singled out two cars I want to look at, but if the money doesn't arrive promptly, they may be gone and I may have to start all over.

Meanwhile, it's a bit of a pain to be carless. Today I'm going to take the bus to the library again. I have a book to return and one to pick up.

Food is still holding up, and even though I am down to three dishwasher...

Meal Planning for the Week

October 29th, 2019 at 02:30 AM by Lucky Robin

This week will be a little different, since we will be eating on the road for two dinners (possibly just one). I am getting low on pork, but it is always on sale so we will be able to buy some on Friday before the scheduled Sunday dinner. I've got a good stock of chicken and chuck roasts. I'll be looking for sales on sirloin steak and pork when the ads come out tomorrow, so I can plan this payday's shopping trip accordingly.

Monday:
Spaghetti with Seasoned Ground Beef
Salad

Tuesday:
Probably...

I Got The Job

Plenty of the things they need, I have in hand.

FIREy Femmes

October 28th, 2019 at 09:17 PM by Greenleaf

Thought I'd share a financial website I've been enjoying lately: https://fireyfemmesxmoneydiaries.wordpress.com/

FIREyFemmes is a Money Diaries style website that is specifically geared toward women interested in the FIRE (financial independence/retire early) movement.

I love money diaries in general (who isn't secretly interested in how other people manage their money?), and I do enjoy the Money Diaries on the Refinery 29 website, but they often seem to leave out the "big...

Florida Son's New Job

October 28th, 2019 at 01:01 PM by CB in the City

I had a good conversation with Florida DS, who will soon be Oregon DS. He is happy to have found a job with such a good company (Amazon), but now that he is looking at the logistics of making such a big move, he is a little freaked out. He does plan to go up by himself at first and live in temporary housing while he searches for a home for the family. He says that housing is more expensive there than in his current home. His MIL is hard at work looking for suitable places online...
