Closed!

July 1st, 2020 at 08:24 PM by Amber

Closed today, I’ll be getting a check on the 7th for just over $700 and I’ll also be getting a refund on the payment I made for July.

The first payment is due September so, I’m throwing August payment into the saving that will give me three to four months of mortgage payment saved. I’m happy with that because that was my goal.

Next I’m adjusting the budget, and my direct deposit, to account for the $222, I’ll be saving each month in mortgage since refinancing....

Baseball Game and June Recap

July 1st, 2020 at 02:06 PM by CB in the City

My grandson's baseball game was so much fun! They won by 10 points, which didn't hurt -- but it was just fun to be out among people (socially distanced and masked) and cheering for the team. The weather was great, warm but with a cool breeze, and I found a place to plant my chair in the shade.

I noticed that the strap on my chair's carrying bag was ready to break. It's a heavy chair and I really need that strap. I tied it, but it's a temporary solution. I may have to get...

June 2020 Interest Income

July 1st, 2020 at 12:35 PM by Creditcardfree

It's time to report interest income. Interest rates are far lower, and we lost a great rate when a recent CD matured.

FNBO $27.20
NFCU $65.43
USAA $0.22
Total $92.85

That's about $70 less than last month. Interesting times. The good times don't always last do they? However, we are very grateful for what we do have.

These funds have been added to our Pot of Possibilities!

Refi, Student Loans and Saving Challenges

July 1st, 2020 at 08:42 AM by Amber

I’m really annoyed with the title company. My rate is locked in for a few more days and we are trying to close but they’re not responding. It’s crazy because I’ve used them twice before with no issues. I’ve given the broker to move on to another company.

I went ahead and paid the mortgage, though the rate is higher, my level of comfortability, is even higher. The broker told me I should be refunded. We will see.

Other news, I received payment from the side hustle,...

Financial impacts of COVID (good & bad) pt 2

July 1st, 2020 at 04:16 AM by ceejay74

It's been a month and a half since my previous post about what COVID has done financially to our household. What a wild ride it continues to be! At least my mental health seems to be settling into a more stable place; not happy, but more accepting that it's going to be a long long time before things get back to anything resembling normal.

Anyway, money stuff:

- Salary. Last time I wrote, NT had seen a 5% paycut. Now, the paycut for him is 20%. The bonus is, he gets Fridays...

Refi - Help

June 30th, 2020 at 08:27 PM by Amber

I was really hoping to close before the first. I have not heard a thing from the title company so I reached out to the broker. She’s telling me to hold off from making a payment. I’m nervous about that. She says if I pay, I’d get reimbursed, anyone know anything about this?

Financial plans

June 30th, 2020 at 08:06 PM by GratefulSaver

In a couple of months, my salary will go up substantially as I will be working full time, my husband is receiving a small pension with health insurance and in November of 2020 he will start collecting early social security benefits. I'll be 51 soon and my husband 62 in October. I am already contributing 15% of my income between a 403B, Roth IRA and Teacher's state pension. We thought about our next move financially and decided to aggressively try to payoff our primary home in 5-7...

Five Years

June 30th, 2020 at 01:45 PM by Life Balance

A few years ago, I read a financial article, book, or blog (I can’t remember unfortunately.) that had an impact on how I prepare for retirement.

Before then I had just focused on a number to achieve for my retirement account – one that would support a ‘retirement phase’ budget with a 4% annual withdrawal. My thought, like many others, was that my retirement date would be the day I achieved that number. I could project that date but not count on it. The article made...

The Ceiling

June 30th, 2020 at 01:43 PM by CB in the City

The contractor called and quoted a price of $2,750, which is very acceptable to me. I was figuring it might cost $5K. He is going to come on Thursday, when he will inspect the ceiling and the layout, and we will talk about dates then.

Last night's baseball game was cancelled during the first inning. A storm suddenly materialized. The game was halted and postponed for 30 minutes, but then it was cancelled.

I was quite surprised at the behavior of the other team and its...

Question for the refi experts out there :-)

June 29th, 2020 at 06:11 PM by ceejay74

Our mortgage lender sent a refi offer -- they FedEx'ed it which was a good ploy to get me to open it.

I like the rates they mention and that there are fewer fees. Plus it would be a chance to eliminate our mortgage insurance, which we're stuck with for the life of our loan regardless of LTV.

But they slapped this chart on the mailing and I'm totally confused. The new scenario shows a new loan amount that's over $120K lower than our current principal balance.

So what I'm...

Monday

June 29th, 2020 at 04:52 PM by CB in the City

It's Monday, so I have started a load of sheets and towels.

My friend P, who is in the process of moving into a retirement home, has been asking me to order a few things for him on Amazon. He is very tech-unsavvy. He was going out to buy things, and I told him to please let me order for him so he wouldn't endanger his health. (He is close to 80 and has several underlying conditions.) I am glad he has consented to let me help. He just sends me a check to cover the cost.

Speaking...
