$20K Update - The new air conditioning is in!!

July 3rd, 2020 at 08:22 PM by Banker Gurl

The new AC system (Mini Split) is in and it feels wonderful! We are all sleeping a lot better, especially baby! I can also carry or wear baby around the house without worrying about being covered in sweat. It is definitely worth the cost. We have not gotten the bill yet, but expect it soon.

We recently paid off the Store Loan (see Debt Update posts) and we were moving the $100 per paycheck that was paid on that to go towards lowering the balance on Rental Mortgage #1, but...

JCP Swimsuits

July 3rd, 2020 at 08:15 PM by Banker Gurl

I bought these back in October and it's finally swimsuit time here! I got a super deal on these women's swimsuit separates and I kept one set for myself cause I love it and it's so comfortable. Great for at the lake with the baby so I don't have to worry about her pulling on my top and stuff popping out...lol

Should be a nice profit!

Last Week's Post, School Updates

July 3rd, 2020 at 04:11 PM by Monkey Mama

My attempt to get caught up and finish my not-finished posts. This is #2 for today:

MM's college class is going well. He chose a challenging class to test the waters at his #1 college choice. He is over the moon with that. He likes his first taste of college, which is a class that is actually challenging.

MH was finally able to find a decent and reasonably priced webcam (in stock). Apparently we had only one in the house. So if anyone else needed it, we've just been...

June Financial Update

July 3rd, 2020 at 03:35 PM by Life Balance

Once a month I calculate our net worth and today was the day. It’s always just after the mortgage payment hits. We’re up $15k since last month. All the numbers moved in the right direction except our house value. According to Zillow, it decreased by $3k since last month.

I used to use a site call networthiq.com to enter our monthly numbers, but the site shut down. I have kicked myself for being dependent on a site because while I do have monthly net worth totals for the...

Mid-Year Financial Update

July 3rd, 2020 at 02:46 PM by Monkey Mama

A quote from my blog May 10, 2020:
I commented in another blog that we aren't experiencing any +/- in our spending. A lot of it is having a bare bones budget to begin with. We are clearly using a lot less cell data (on wifi 100% now) but that might save us $4 this month ($1 per line). My commute has decreased a little bit, so my electric fuel spending might be $20 instead of $25. It's just stuff like that.

Other comments I apparently made elsewhere:
--Our grocery spending has only gone up with kids home 24/7 and inability to shop more carefully (just making do with whatever we can find). {We can no longer find family sized peanut butter, just as a random example. I have no idea when we will ever get our generic TP back}.

--Although I hadn't noticed any difference in our monthly spending, I expected more of our annual expenses to decrease (things like auto insurance or vacation spending).

As the year is half way over, I decided to sit down and see how things were shaking out compared to last year.

Income: Same as last year
Kind of hard to believe, because I was working two jobs the first half of 2019. But the lack of side income in 2020 has been offset by a raise, stimulus, and large unemployment checks.

So... pretty much all the extra income without the extra work.

Expenses:

Auto Fuel (Electric) -$14 (as expected; driving about 20% less)

Auto Fuel (Gas) -$300
What surprises me about this is that MH hasn't gotten gas since April 1. ??? Though he drove to work every day in May!? I expect he probably only drove to work 3 days per week (used electric car the days I worked from home) and his commute is only 3 miles each way. It makes sense. Usually he does a lot more trips back and forth dropping off and picking up kids. It may be a very short commute, but it is a lot of back and forth. This is not just a short term gain. This will be our reality very soon, once both kids are self sufficient drivers. I honestly don't know how much we will be even driving DL(14) to school this next school year. No doubt this will save a lot of wear and tear on our gas car (more of the bigger "annual savings" that I was envisioning). Current school plan for DL is to only have to be on campus 2 days per week, and they are expecting to (realistically) be closed one quarter during peak flu season. He turns 15 next week, so we get off easy during our last year of "driving kids around".

Groceries +$600
Up $200/month since pandemic, which makes sense.
Offset by spending $250 less on school lunches

Honestly, I am surprised that's it. It feels like our grocery spending is completely absurd. I think this is offset by a lot of "doing without and making do".

**Fuel/Food spending ends up being a wash**

Vacation Spending -$2,700
$2,700 was our entire 2019 spending (spent during the first half of 2019). I expect to spend -$0- this year.

Edited to add: Our annual family camp trip was canceled. 😞 We have decided to go to the family cabin for a weekend, near Tahoe. It's awful that we don't remember the last time we took the kids there. They are excited about it. No firm plans yet, but probably some time this month. It won't take much planning. It's in the same vicinity as camp, so we figured it was the next best thing. Cost to us will be: -$0-. Maybe $5 for fuel to get there and back. I am not going to bother recording that $5 under the "vacation" category. 😉

Medical Expenses -$6,600
Last year we had spent $4k on braces and we usually max out our medical deductible on MH's MRIs. I think in this case he is just not due for an MRI yet, but I also expect they may be pushing off less "medically necessary" appointments.

Other Expenses ~ Breakeven

Net worth and assets are stagnant. Which is better than I hoped for a few months ago.

Bought A Generator and History Thoughts

July 3rd, 2020 at 01:20 PM by Creditcardfree

Our power went out last night for the third time in the last four months. We never know how long it will be out. One of those recent times it was out for 21 hours. At a minimum it is inconvenient, but usually longer than four hours, food has to be tossed, so we lose money when this happens.

We all hopped in the van and headed to Home Depot. My husband had one generator in mind when we went, but turns out they did not have that one in stock. We ended up with a Ryobi 4000 Watt...

Good Game!

July 3rd, 2020 at 01:13 PM by CB in the City

Our team won by one point, after coming back from eight points behind. Very exciting! So cute to see the boys at the end, lining up to do the "good game" hand slap, but instead tossing their hats, in respect for the no-contact guidelines.

My phone froze yesterday and it was quite a while before it rebooted. It's been glitchy in other ways, and, of course, replacement has been on my list for a while. But I don't want to do it now, when I am so strapped by the ceiling repair!...

Harvesting and Still No Social Security Card

July 3rd, 2020 at 06:53 AM by Lucky Robin

Today I was able to harvest a pound of snow peas, 3/4 of a quart of strawberries, 10 blueberries (the first of the season) and a 1/2 pint of raspberries (the first of the season). I have several itty bitty cucumbers and zucchinis growing. The beans are starting to put out runners and grab the strings, the corn has hit the top of the low tunnel so we'll have to take care of that, and all of the potatoes but the last row are pushing up some leaves. The second to last row is only...

GratefulSaver

Comparison

July 3rd, 2020 at 01:15 AM by GratefulSaver

This month is the beginning of a new financial goal for us; mortgage principal pay down. I've formulated a plan to meet this goal in 5 years, but hopefully in less time.

If we were to pay our mortgage with no extra principal payment, we will pay $192K in interest at the end of the 30 year term. With our 5 year plan, we will pay $56K in interest. Hopefully, we can crush this sucker in less time but funding retirement and taking a one week vacation is a priority as well.

I...

Taxes Are Done!

July 3rd, 2020 at 01:00 AM by Amber

Wrapped up my taxes, $538 refund. The new tax bill wasn’t good to me, it screwed up my deductions for the house but hey 🤷🏾‍♀️
Once I received the refund, I’ll pay $54 for tithes, $100 to the EF and the rest to student loans. I think I’m going to surpass my $1,000 student loan payment for July. Next week I should be able to drop another $500 on the loans, with the first check in July and extra cash being received. I am feeling so excited. I already paid $500...

Contractor Visit -- and the Chair

July 2nd, 2020 at 10:14 PM by CB in the City

The ceiling contractor came today and looked over the ceiling and the layout of my condo. I gave him a check for half of the total cost, and I will give him the other half when the work is done. Right now it looks like that will be August. He will send me some possible dates.

I am going to be careful to spend as little as I can during this time. This being a cash transaction, I will be a little cash poor.

Soon I will be going to another of GS1's baseball games. I will...

weirder rentals

July 2nd, 2020 at 01:25 AM by mumof2

So we are still looking for houses for my mom and these are the sorts of things they have in their ads...I have honestly never seen stuff like this before but it is so weird to me and wonder how anyone can rent their houses out
Exclusions: Fireplaces, external toilet, large shed and electronic functions on pod shower are not available for tenant use.

No wonder it is so hard to find her a rental...we see stuff like this on half the ads....and who still has an external toilet??

Rebates

July 1st, 2020 at 11:57 PM by DK62565

We have received a couple of rebates. One was from Menards for some things we purchased for a new sink and faucet. We didn't really need anything as far as home improvement stuff, but then I thought about it and decided to use the money to buy paper towels, facial tissue, and toilet paper. I figured that is stuff we would buy anyway and why not use this "found money" to purchase it?

DH uses Miracle Gro garden soil to enrich his garden and they had a rebate of $2 a bag. He bought...

Payday Report for 7/26/20

July 1st, 2020 at 11:51 PM by Lucky Robin

I had a major fibromyalgia flare when we got back from Seattle followed by a cold I'm pretty sure I caught at the hospital, so I haven't been updating anything for a while. I still feel a little cruddy, but at least I am now upright. We are still on a wait and see with DD's tumor. We get another scan in 6 months. As for payday, there were a few hours of overtime on it, and here's what we did.

My English Castle

July? Really?

July 1st, 2020 at 08:39 PM by My English Castle

Though June seemed to last forever, maybe Paul Simon is right, and July, she will fly?

We started the morning picking strawberries at a local farm. We went early to avoid the heat, and picked just one flat. I'll make freezer jam tonight, but freeze others for smoothies and maybe a strawberry margarita or two. There'll be some for desserts and lots for just eating.

Got the news that DD's UK adult passport app has been received so that's good news. And we've switched...
