Personally, I really like the “minor” holidays. Sure, it’s fun to celebrate the big major holidays such as Easter and Christmas. However, minor holidays are fun because they offer a chance to celebrate in a smaller way. You don’t have to make huge plans, buy lots of gifts, travel out of town. Instead, you can just do small things to bring celebratory fun into your day, week, or season. For example, St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations can be fun holidays. Couched in between Valentine’s Day and Easter, St. Patrick’s Day is a low-key, no-fuss, zero-pressure holiday.
Celebrating Minor Holidays
I’m not sure when I started celebrating minor holidays. However, I do know that Happiness researcher and author Gretchen Rubin makes a point of this in her work, which I noticed years ago when reading one of her books. She says,
“Celebrating minor holidays is one way to make time stand out. Because this day was unusual, it’s more memorable.”
So, not only is it easy and fuss-free to celebrate minor holidays, but it also makes the days of the year a little bit more special when you do so.
10 Crazy Things You Should Have for St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations
You don’t have to buy anything or go anywhere in order to celebrate minor holidays. However, making purchases for your St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations can add a bit of fun. Gretchen Rubin also talks in her work about how experiences have multiple parts: the anticipation before, the enjoyment during, and the savoring after. By shopping for and planning out your St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations, you get the chance to heighten the anticipation phase. Then, of course, you utilize those items to enjoy the actual experience. Moreover, through photos or even scrapbooking or preserving the actual items, you can add to the savoring of the experience later. Plus, some items can be saved and used year after year – the same way that we might re-use Christmas ornaments. With that in mind, here are ten fun things you might want to have for St. Patricks Day celebrations:
1. St. Patrick’s Day Temporary Tattoos
Leprechauns Made Me Do It, Kiss Me I’m Irish, and foamy green beer steins are just a few of the temporary tattoos in this St. Patricks Day set. Have fun decorating yourself, your friends, and your family as part of your holiday celebration this year.
2. St. Patrick’s Day Socks
Go wild with a set of twelve different pairs of green holiday-themed socks. They come in a gift box, which is fun, because you could actually gift them all to someone. Everyone expects to receive birthday and Christmas presents. However, it’s the times when you get an unexpected gift that really stand out. Of course, an alternative might be to have people over for a pajama party and share your socks with everyone!
3. St. Patrick’s Day Track Suit
Go all out with this two-piece green track suit with rhinestone bling down the sides. One of the five-star Amazon reviews says, “I bought this for my fiancé and it brought him complete joy. It fit him perfectly and the quality of the suit was beyond expectation. 100% recommend.”
4. Green Kilt for St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations
The track suit is original, and it will definitely get noticed at your St. Patricks Day pub crawls. However, the kilt is an obvious classic.
5. The Little Book of Irishisms
Dig into the history of the Irish a little bit with this book that shares the vocabulary of the culture. Whip out one or two of these words in conversation this St. Patrick’s Day to share the knowledge with others. You might even use the book to create your own trivia game for your party.
6. Irish Gauge, Strategy Board Game
Speaking of games, there are some great Irish-themed and St. Patrick’s themed games that you could include at a party. Irish Gauge, for example, is a Strategy Board Game for three to five players. You invest in, and build railway tracks for, five different companies in Ireland. This interactive game is set in mid-nineteenth century Ireland. You could have a lot of fun learning something about the area and celebrating the culture through this game.
Alternatively, you might want to look into Irish-themed bingo cards, St. Patrick’s playing card decks, jigsaw puzzles related to Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day, or Lucky Flip which is a strategy and memory game. You can also find St. Patrick’s Day themed dice to create game challenges such as “drink two beers with a leprechaun.”
7. St. Patrick’s Day Inflatable Leprechaun
Speaking of leprechauns, for those of you who want to get really wild, you can get giant inflatable leprechauns to adorn your outdoor party. The one that you see pictured here is 26 feet tall! No one is ever going to miss your party with this out there to let people know where it’s at.
