What Retail Stores Are Open/Closed on Veteran’s Day 2022?

November 8, 2022 by Vicky Monroe

What Retail Stores Are Open/Closed On Veteran's Day?

Veteran’s Day is coming up on Friday, November 11th. It’s a day dedicated to honoring current and former members of the armed forces for their bravery and service to our country. Since Veteran’s Day is a federal holiday, you may be wondering, what retail stores are open/closed on Veteran’s Day? Here’s everything you need to know.

What Retail Stores Are Open/Closed on Veteran’s Day?

Many employers give their workers the day off on Veteran’s Day so they can enjoy the long weekend with their families. If you don’t have to work on Veteran’s Day, you may be thinking about running a few errands or getting your Christmas shopping out of the way early. Regardless, you’re probably wondering, what retail stores are open/closed on Veteran’s Day?

You’ll be glad to know that retail stores, supermarkets, and drugstores are usually open on Veteran’s Day, so you can shop all holiday weekend long. Although Veteran’s Day is a federal holiday, private businesses aren’t forced to close in observance of it, so the vast majority of stores stay open. Even Costco, which is known for closing its doors on more holidays than other major stores, will be open during its regular business hours on Veteran’s Day.

However, it’s still a good idea to call the stores you’re planning to visit to confirm their holiday hours, especially if you’re shopping at local small businesses.

Veteran’s Day Discounts

Many stores have Veteran’s Day sales in honor of the holiday. Some discounts are available to everyone, while others are reserved for current and former military service members. Target, for example, is offering 10% off two purchases when military personnel, veterans, and their family members sign up for Target Circle. Below are some more retailers that are offering military discounts on Veteran’s Day.

  • Adidas – 30% off online and in-store & 20% off at factory stores
  • Apple – 10% off most purchases
  • BJ’s – 30% off the cost of membership
  • Michaels – 15% discount, available online and in-store
  • Lowe’s – 10% off eligible items
  • Dollar General – 20% off purchases
  • Nike – 10% off, available online and in-store

Are Restaurants Open on Veteran’s Day?

While you’re out and about shopping, you might get hungry and want to grab a bite to eat. Like retail stores, restaurants are typically open on Veteran’s Day during their regular, planned business hours. Many popular restaurant chains even offer special discounts and freebies to veterans and active duty military to thank them for their service. For instance, Applebee’s, Bob Evans, Cicis Pizza, and Golden Corral are all offering service members a free entree on Friday, November 11th.

What’s Closed on Veteran’s Day?

Although retail stores are open on Veteran’s Day, some things will be closed on the holiday. Banks, post offices, non-essential government offices, federal courts, and some schools shut down on Veteran’s Day. Even though the stock market is open, the bond market will be closed because it operates on a different holiday schedule. Some cities like Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania have Veteran’s Day parades and may close certain roads so the floats and performers can process safely, which is something to be aware of.
