Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors veterans who died serving their country. It’s celebrated on the last Monday of May every year. Because it’s a national holiday, many banks, businesses, and government offices shut down to observe it. If you’re an avid trader, you may be wondering, is the stock market closed on Memorial Day 2022? Here’s everything you need to know about the stock market’s holiday hours so you can plan your transactions accordingly.
Is The Stock Market Closed on Memorial Day 2022?
Unfortunately the stock market closes to observe Memorial Day. So the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will both be closed on May 30th, 2022. You won’t be able to make any trades until the stock market reopens on Tuesday, May 31st at 9:30 a.m., so make sure you plan ahead.
It’s important to note that the bond market won’t be open on Memorial Day either. The bond market follows a similar holiday schedule and is usually closed on the same days as the stock market.
The bond market is also closing early on the Friday before Memorial Day at 2 p.m. EST. So you’ll need to finish all of your trades by then, or wait until the bond market reopens on Tuesday, May 31st at 8 a.m. to take care of business.
Stock and Bond Market Holiday Hours
In total, the stock market closes on ten holidays, including:
- Memorial Day
- Juneteenth National Independence Day
- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Presidents’ Day
- Good Friday
The stock market usually closes early on Black Friday as well at 1 p.m. EST.
After Memorial Day, the next time the stock market will close is on Juneteenth National Independence Day. It falls on Sunday, June 19th, but will be observed by the stock market on Monday, June 20th. Juneteenth was just added to the list of stock market holidays this year, so make sure you update your calendar.
The bond market typically follows the same holiday schedule as the stock market with a few additional holidays sprinkled in. The bond market shuts its doors on Veterans Day, Columbus Day, and Holy Thursday. It also closes early on several holidays including Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve at 2 p.m.
It’s also worth mentioning that if one of these holidays occurs on a weekend, the stock and bond markets usually celebrate it on a different day. Holidays that fall on a Saturday are typically observed the day before on Friday. And holidays that fall on Sunday are celebrated the next day on Monday.
Are Foreign Markets Closed on Memorial Day 2022?
Foreign markets will likely be open on Memorial Day 2022 because it’s an American holiday that other countries don’t celebrate. International markets have different holiday schedules than the US stock market. For example, Indian markets are open on the Fourth of July, but are closed on India’s Independence Day, which falls on August 15th. So make sure to familiarize yourself with the holiday schedule of the foreign market you want to invest in since it will differ from the US stock market schedule.
