I wouldn’t say that I’m a huge gift giver. Sometimes I do get in the mood and give things to people. However, I’m not the type of person who can pick out the perfect gift easily. And I don’t really believe in giving stuff just for the sake of giving it. Therefore, I don’t always buy gifts for people. When I do give gifts, they’re usually handmade and personalized, because that’s what I’m more into. But, this year, I did send my mom a Mother’s Day gift. So, that got me thinking about the different things that I’ve given my mom as a gift over the years.
Mom’s Mother’s Day Present This Year
A couple of weeks ago, I was browsing through a store that I like over on Polk Street here in San Francisco. It’s one of those stores that basically just has adorable gift items. I was waiting for my dog to get done with his bath at a nearby groomer, so I was just looking around.
I can definitely go into these stores, look around, and walk out without buying anything. In fact, I rarely end up purchasing anything at stores like this, even though I think all of their stuff is cute. However, they had a table display of Mother’s Day stuff that caught my eye.
There was a journal there that you could fill in for your mom, and I considered getting that. It’s just the type of personalized gift that I would normally love to give to my mom. However, I also realized that I didn’t have time in my schedule to work on that and get it mailed out before Mother’s Day. So, I didn’t get that.
Because Of You Mom, Book
But then, I noticed a children’s book called “Because Of You, Mom.” It’s just a simple, adorable little book. It has cute drawings. And each page says things like, “Because of you, Mom, I know who I am.” I just loved the whole sentiment. So, I bought it.
I personalized the book a little bit going through and adding Post It Notes to some pages. They were just simple additions like, “this one is so true for me!” and “I love you Mom.” I always like adding the personal touch to gifts in some way. So, I mailed this off to my mom, and she should receive it tomorrow, and hopefully she finds it as charming as I do.
Other Gifts I’ve Given To Mom
Mostly, I give personalized gifts to people, whether family or friends. However, sometimes I do enjoy buying flowers or gift baskets or things like that for people. So, here are some of the other gifts that I remember giving to my mom over the years, whether for Mother’s Day, her birthday, or just because.
Handcrafted Book of Memories
My siblings and I put together a bunch of thoughts about different memories we had with our mom. I compiled those into a huge scrapbook. It was really oversized, probably 1 1/2 feet tall. I decorated it and added our writing. I can’t actually remember if this one included photos or not, although I think it probably did.
Scrapbooks and Photo Gifts
This is the one gift that I’m known for. I give photo scrapbooks to almost everyone in my life at some point or another. I make them for myself every year. In the process, I make some for others as well. Sometimes they’re super simple – just a small album with photos tucked in the pages. Other times, they’re elaborate in their decorations and themes. I really think this is the best gift to receive and I know most people like getting them. I’ve given Mom lots of these over the years.
Handmade Cards
I love to handcraft cards. Mostly I use images from magazines, washi tape, and stickers to create these cards. Sometimes I use photos, fabric, and other items. I make them regularly and always have tons of them around to give to people. I sent one of these with the Mother’s Day gift book mentioned above. And I send them to her regularly for random holidays, as well.
Store-bought Cards
I actually don’t mind store-bought cards, even though I love to make many by hand. Sometimes I browse at stores and see the perfect one. My mom and I share a love of cute animals. (Actually, the whole family shares this.) So, I often send her store-bought cards with cute pups and kittens on them.
Flowers
There are a few people that I like to order flowers for periodically. My sister is the one I send them to the most, I think. But, if I recall correctly, I’ve given flowers to my mom periodically over the years.
Food, Spa, and Gift Baskets and Boxes
I do love gift baskets and gift boxes. Sometimes, I purchase them as is and send them off. Other times, I grab a bag or box and do the shopping myself to fill it up. I include food and treats, bath stuff, crafty stuff, and other things. It depends on the person, the holiday, and my mood. My mom loves to take baths, so I think bath stuff is what I’ve given her most often. Bath bombs, bubble bath, soaps … they’re all great gifts.
Home Bath Jacuzzi
Speaking of baths, I did order her a home bath Jacuzzi for Christmas last year. I don’t always do Christmas presents for her or anyone else, but sometimes I do. I thought that this would be a nice treat. Basically, you plug it in and set it into your bath and it creates a bubbling Jacuzzi-style experience in your own tub. My mom doesn’t treat herself to a lot of things, but she loves her baths, and so why not give her something to make them even better? I don’t know how often she uses this, but she said that she enjoyed it when she mentioned using it.
