While the holiday season is typically about togetherness, friends, and family, many people also want to handle some trades before the year draws to a close. At times, this is simply because it’s a wise tax strategy that has to be implemented before 2021 comes to a close. In others, it’s because unique opportunities arise near the end of the calendar year, or a specific event made buying or selling a security a smart idea. As a result, many people may be wondering, “Is the stock market open on Christmas Eve 2021?” If you’re curious about whether you’ll be able to complete trades on December 24, 2021, here’s everything you need to know.
Is the Stock Market Open on Christmas Eve 2021?
No, the U.S. stock market is not open on Christmas Eve 2021. This includes both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the NASDAQ.
While a Christmas Eve closure isn’t usually part of the stock market holiday schedule, it will happen in 2021. Since Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, the holiday is being observed on the Friday before, which happens to be Christmas Eve.
The same thing will actually occur on New Year’s Eve. Since New Year’s Day is typically an observed holiday that results in a stock market closure and it will fall on a Saturday, the holiday will shift to Friday, December 31. As a result, the stock market is also going to close on New Year’s Eve this year.
Are International Stock Markets Open on Christmas Eve?
Some, but not all, international exchanges are open on Christmas Eve. Largely, whether the market is open depends on whether Christmas is a traditionally celebrated holiday in the associated nation and how the market decides to shift the holiday.
For example, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange won’t be open on Christmas Eve. However, the London Stock Exchange is open for limited trading hours on Christmas Eve but will be closed on Monday, December 27, to observe the Christmas holiday. The Shanghai Stock Market isn’t closing at all in December.
