Many people believe that Thanksgiving isn’t complete without a nice turkey dinner. The issue is, a turkey can be incredibly expensive, which isn’t ideal for anyone on a tight budget. Luckily, there are ways to get the star of the meal for free. If you’re wondering where you can find free turkeys for Thanksgiving, here are eight places to look.
1. BJ’s Wholesale
If you’re a BJ’s member, you can get a free Butterball turkey if you spend at least $100 on qualifying items during one transaction. You can score the deal either in-club or by heading online.
You’ll also qualify for a $10 award. You can use that reward on most items, allowing you to save a bit on other holiday shopping.
2. Foodtown
Foodtown shoppers can get a free turkey with their club card. All they need to do is to make at least $400 in qualifying purchases before Thanksgiving Day. If you usually shop at the store, this may be easier than you’d expect.
If you’re not looking for a turkey, you can actually use this deal for other items. You could get a ham instead or a lasagna. Otherwise, you can request a $10 Foodtown gift card.
3. H-E-B
At H-E-B, there’s a buy-one, get-one deal that can score you a free turkey. If you purchase a H-E-B spiral ham, you could be eligible for a turkey at no cost.
The turkey weight limit is set at up to 12 lbs., which would be enough for many households. If you might want a ham for Thanksgiving as well or are open to freezing it for another occasion, like Christmas, this could be a reasonable deal.
4. Ibotta
With Ibotta, if someone downloads the Ibotta app and registers a new account with your code, you’ll get a $15 turkey offer. If you find a turkey at a participating retailer for $15 or less, it’s essentially free. Plus, you’ll get another $10 when the referred person completes their first shopping trip through the app. That’s a total of $25 to help reduce your grocery bills.
Plus, Ibotta isn’t just helping people get a free turkey; you can get an entire Thanksgiving meal at no cost by using the rebate app. There are deals for specific Thanksgiving meal staples that make the items free. You want to act fast though, as there is a limited quantity of these rebates available.
5. Safeway
At Safeway, you can qualify for a free Honey Suckle turkey up to 16 lbs. if you make a purchase of $100 to $149.99 in a single transaction using your U account. If you spend $150 or more, you can get up to a 24 lbs. turkey instead, which could make this an exceptional option for anyone hosting a larger gathering.
The deal works on in-store purchases and online orders. However, you only have until November 23, 2021, to use this deal, so you’ll want to act fast if you’re going to use it.
6. ShopRite
ShopRite Price Plus members can qualify for a free turkey. You have to spend at least $400 before Thanksgiving on qualifying purchases. Once you’ve done that, you’re eligible for the free turkey.
ShopRite is another store that gives you options. While you can use the deal to get a free turkey, you can apply it to other items instead. You could choose ham if you prefer. It’s also possible to use it on a kosher chicken, tofurky, or lasagna.
7. Local Promotions
Many local businesses use free turkeys to attract customers. For example, some car dealerships will give away free turkeys if you head in for a test drive.
You may also hear an ad for a free turkey with a full set of car tires or another kind of large purchase. With deals like these, you should only move forward if you’d need the items you’d have to buy to qualify. Otherwise, it isn’t a good deal.
Along the same line, local radio and television stations often give away turkeys during the holiday. In most cases, these are sweepstakes or contests, so the rules for getting one can vary. However, it’s worth exploring.
8. Food Banks
Many families look for a free turkey because affording one is challenging. Luckily, many food banks try to make a nice holiday meal accessible by giving qualifying households access to free turkeys and other meal staples.
Usually, you need to live within a certain area to use a food bank. There could be other restrictions as well, such as a demonstrated need. If you want to see whether you’re eligible, it’s best to contact your food bank directly or find its website online.
It’s important to note that not every food bank will have free turkeys. While some may have whole turkeys available, others may provide families with turkey breasts or legs. Some may not have turkey at all. Ultimately, food banks rely on donations, and there’s no guarantee that they’ll get turkeys. However, if they do, they will make them available.
