Fourth of July is coming up quickly. It’s one of the year’s federal holidays. Therefore, you might find yourself wondering whether certain things are open or closed on this day? For example, is the stock market closed on 4th of July 2021?
Federal Holidays 2021
There are typically ten federal holidays in each year. However, in 2021, there are actual 12. Recently, Juneteenth was declared an official federal holiday. Therefore, there will be eleven annual federal holidays moving forward.
New Year’s Day 2022 falls on a Saturday. When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, we observe it on the Friday before. Therefore, we’ll observe it on New Year’s Eve. so, technically, it’s a 2021 holiday this year. This is a bit unusual but it makes sense when you look at the calendar.
The Stock Market Is Closed on Federal Holidays
Certain things are always closed on federal holidays. Basically, government offices and related services shut down, with the obvious exception of necessary services such as fire departments. Courthouses, libraries, and the post office all close for federal holidays. And yes, the stock market closes. So, is the stock market closed on 4th of July 2021? The short answer is yes. However, because of the calendar, it’s a little bit more complicated than that.
The Stock Market Is Closed on Sundays
Independence Day falls on a Sunday this year. The stock market is always closed on Sundays. NYSE, NASDAQ, and the bond markets are all closed on Sundays. Therefore, whether or not it was Independence Day, the stock market would be closed on 4th of July 2021.
Is The Stock Market Closed on 4th of July 2021?
If the 4th of July fell on a weekday, then the answer would be simple. The stock market would close for the day. However, in 2021, 4th of July falls on a Sunday. When a federal holiday falls on a Sunday, we observe it on the Monday following that day. Therefore, in 2021, we observe Independence Day on Monday, July 5th.
So, yes, the stock market will be closed on the 4th of July. That’s because it’s a Sunday. The stock market is always closed on Sundays. However, the stock market will also close on the 5th of July. That’s the day we’ll observe the federal holiday. So, even though we’re going to have our barbecues and fireworks on Sunday, July 4, 2021, the stock market will also stay closed that Monday, July 5th.
The Stock Market Re-Opens on July 6, 2021
So, the stock market is closed on Independence Day because that’s a Sunday. It’s also closed on Monday, July 5th in observance of Independence Day. Therefore, regular stock market activities resume on Tuesday, July 6, 2021.
For NYSE, the pre-opening session begins at 6:30 am ET. For NASDAQ, the pre-opening sessions begins at 4 am ET. Both of them have regular core trading sessions hours that open at 9:30 am.
