If you lived in the late 19th century or early 20th century, then you would have benefitted from multiple mail deliveries daily, depending on where you lived, six days a week. Even though the United States Post Office as we know it was founded as an independent government agency in 1971, its prototypical roots go as far back as the late 1770s. In 1863, which was two years before the end of the American Civil War, citizens enjoyed mail deliveries anywhere from a single time in less populated areas to over nine times a day in New York City. The operational convenience of multiple daily delivery routes was slowly phased out from the 1950s to the 1990s due to money-saving measures and budget cuts. And of course, with the advent of modernity, the post office is now closed about ten times a year in federal observance of holidays and to also save money on operational costs. So, is the post office open on Memorial Day 2021?
Is the Post Office Open On Memorial Day 2021?
No. The post office is closed on Memorial Day this year, which is Monday, May 31, 2021.
Even though most people equate Memorial Day with sales of consumer goods and the unofficial start of the summer season. But it is actually a solemn federal holiday. Memorial Day is a federal holiday for the public mourning, honor, and observance of all the military personnel who have ever fought and died fighting defending the United States. Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday of every May.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday. All federal agencies, banks, most businesses, and all post offices are closed for observance. So, you won’t receive any letters, packages, bills, special deliveries, or flyers through the United States Post Office on Memorial Day.
Your local post may have a self-service style, the unsecured section. It may be open to the general public on Sundays and on federal holidays. In this circumstance, there would be no on-duty post office employees to assist you.
So, if you want to check a post office box, buy stamps and postage from a kiosk and drop off a package in a dropbox, you may do so. Just keep in mind that any package you drop in a post office drop box won’t be serviced or mailed until the next business day.
Here is a post office locator website. Just input your city or zip code and you will be presented with a list of your local post offices and their operating hours.
And here is a calendar list of all the federal holidays and events in 2021 when the United States Post office will be closed.
Typical post office hours are 9 AM to 5 PM or 8 AM to 4 PM depending on where you live. Your local post office will operate on a half-day schedule on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays.
Are UPS or FedEx Open on Memorial Day 2021?
The United States Parcel Service and Federal Express are both closed on Memorial Day 2021 to the general public.
If it matters to you, FedEx Office will be operating on modified hours and FedEx Custom Critical will be open on Memorial Day 2021.
Hub District Post Offices, Shopping Centers, and Malls
If you live in a large metropolitan city, there may be one or two large main post offices that are open seven days a week at various operating hours.
For example, the James A. Farley post office in New York City, located near Madison Square Garden, is open seven days a week.
You may also be able to find a mini-post office in a large shopping center or mall, although they would probably process your mail but not deliver it until the next day.
However, such locations would probably far from you and operate at shorter hours than during typical business days and hours.
Your best option is to conduct your mailing business on the days and weekend before Memorial Day or on Tuesday, June 1st, 2021, the day after.
