National Hot Dog day is upon us, and it is time to celebrate! Never heard of the holiday? No need to fear, I hadn’t either. With COVID really bringing the joy in life to a screeching halt for a lot of people, it is good to find joy in the little things. So, you have the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council to thank for this one. National Hot Dog Day has been scheduled, on a Wednesday in July, every year since 1991. Whether or not you have cared to recognize this holiday before, this is the perfect year to start. Here are some tips for a relaxing at-home weenie roast!
Best Hot Dog Brands
When it comes to dogs that you can find at the grocery store, there are a couple that rise above the rest. The number one for me, as somebody who enjoys flavor over size, Nathan’s are by far the best. If you do need your hot dogs to be a little bigger, grab yourself a bag of Hebrew National beef franks. Both of these pack a lot of punch for a great price, and go well with any topping you can think of. That brings us to our next subject.
Creative Topping Combinations!
Below are my favorite combo hot dogs to make at home; each goes with a very different flavor and mood:
The Spicy Chili Dog: Chili (obviously), shredded cheddar cheese, and sliced jalapenos.
The Reuben Dog: Sauerkraut and mustard. If you want even more of a punch in the mouth, throw some chopped onions on there.
Deli Dog: Wrap the frank in prosciutto, top with shredded provolone and Dijon mustard.
Heart Attack: Wrap the frank in bacon, top with fries or crushed potato chips, and drizzle barbecue sauce on top.
The Californian: Melted cheddar cheese, grilled onions, and thousand island dressing.
How to Host The Cookout (With or Without Friends)
If you are dedicated to social distancing, then you can always make these dogs on your own in the backyard. If you don’t have a grill or outdoor space, you can oven roast your dogs, and they’ll turn out great. Be sure to puncture them if you choose to go the microwave route, though I don’t recommend it at all. The key to doing it on your own will be breaking out all the things that relax you. A nice drink, your favorite show, and a delicious hot dog make for a great night to yourself. If you have an outdoor space, sit outside and read or smoke a cigar. Wherever you are, take this time to escape a little, and really wind down.
If you’re ready to make National Hot Dog Day (or the weekend of, people have work after all) the first big party you’ve thrown all summer, then the first thing to decide is location. Get outside. If there is a park nearby, use it. Have a pool area in your complex or community? Even better. Bring some outdoor games and something to blast some music on. Make sure that you provide ways to have fun that your guests can do without you. This way, you don’t have to deal with any nagging while you are perfecting your hot dogs!
