The History of Lowe’s
Founded in 1946 in North Carolina, Lowe’s began as your typical small-town hardware store, according to the company’s history. It was H. Carl Buchan who owned what was then North Wilkesboro Hardware Company with is brother-in-law James Lowe and had a vision of turning it into a chain of hardware stores. Buchan saw promise with a post-World War II demand for building homes and later purchased the company from James. He was able to offer lower prices by dealing with manufacturers himself instead of wholesalers, and focused on selling hard-to-find building materials, hardware, and appliances.
As sales grew, Lowe’s expanded in neighboring towns throughout North Carolina, and in 1961, the company went public. Luckily for Lowe’s, the housing market soared during this time, and professional builders were using the home improvement chain as their go-to for materials. As their customer base grew, they started to cater to the do-it-yourself (DIY) homeowner while still accommodating and providing materials to contractors and professionals in the industry. This called for a new demand: expansion.
In 1994, the modern-day Lowe’s was born, with stores consisting of 85,000 square feet of selling space. In 2012, they made plans to expand even more to 94,000 square-foot stores in lower-mid size selling markets and 103,000 square-foot stores in larger markets.
Today, despite its growth, the company states that it strives to remain true to its core — providing excellent customer service while offering high-quality products at lower prices.
