Fidel Castro’s Political Career
Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born on August 13, 1926 in Biran, Oriente (Spain). He served as a Cuban politician since 1959. Castro participated in a series of rebellions to overthrow right-wing Cuban government officials for which he served one year in prison. Afterwards, Castro decided to travel to Mexico with his brother Raul and friend Che Guevara. Once he returned to Cuba, Castro decided he would take a key role in the Cuban Revolution.
Castro lead the guerrilla warfare movement against Batista’s forces in Cuba which lead to Batista’s overthrow in 1959. This is when Castro assumed the power of Cuba’s Prime Minister. The then very young Fidel Castro decided to partner with the Soviet Union. The United States opposed Castro’s government which ultimately led to an economic blockade, the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Many of his critics labeled him a dictator who oversaw many human rights violations.
He led a life of a rather divisive political figure. People either loved him or hated him. Most U.S. citizens had a rather bad taste in their mouths when in came to Castro’s name and policies. However, the leader had been decorated with various international awards during his lifetime and many of his supporters said that he was a champion of socialism and helped secure Cuba’s independence.
Now that the rather controversial figure is dead many people are wondering, what is Fidel Castro’s net worth?
Fidel Castro’s Net Worth
Fidel Castro, with lack of a better word, ruled Cuba since 1959. He became Prime Minister in 1959, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba in 1961 and in 1976 he became the 17th President of Cuba and President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba. When he died last Friday, Nov. 25, he’d led a significant political career and definitely made an impact on the world.
With such a major impact and significant career, Fidel Castro’s net worth had reached $900 million. In 2006, Forbes Magazine – the source of the $900 million estimate – revealed Castro as one of the world’s most wealthy leaders in the world (his net worth sat at about the same amount then). This is surprising and angers many people because Cuba has been in a dire situation for decades. The country has an average monthly salary of only $20 and food oftentimes is scarce, however, Castro had not wanted for anything for years.
Castro was infamous for having the majority of his assets in Swiss bank accounts, which made it extremely hard to track. The way Castro handled his money and other assets left no paper trail. However, if his brother and children are able to track it down they will run into a huge fortune.
His overall net worth is hard to track because he claimed no assets. Castro tried to tell the people of Cuba that he has survived on a small salary, however, the cash and assets he’s left behind tell a different story. His brother, Raul Castro, who is taking his place as president in Cuba, will inherit the majority of his $900 million cash wealth. Some of his assets will also be claimed by Castro’s children.
