  • Pet Sitting on Rover

We’ve used Rover in the past for dog walks and boarding but it never occurred to me to sign up to be a Rover pet sitter myself until recently when a friend recommended it.

She signed up to be a Rover pet sitter to have some extra friends for her dog and earn a little bit of extra fun money.

I typically pay $45/day for doggy care so my dog can get socialization with other dogs so I loved the idea of having an extra doggy friend stay with us sometimes. Felt like I was saving on daycare fees and earning a little bit too. We’ve also spitballed on actually starting a doggy daycare business (not in our home) so it felt a little bit like loose research.

I only accept one dog at a time and in three months have made about $2k. However, it turns out my dog doesn’t love sharing his home space with other dogs so we’re not going to continue with dog sitting (he just gets a little mopey) but it has been a fun little adventure to try.

I also found some of the owners and their dogs are a little bit crazy. I might have been more tolerant if we were doing this to earn money but that wasn’t our motivator so it’s an easy decision to say we’re done.

I have kept my Rover profile active for cat sitting though because that is the easiest gig ever (go to their house, refresh food, change litter box) and keep my radius to 1 mile of my house. I’ve only had a few bookings but it’s been about $300 of the $2k. Coffee money!

My friend still loves doing it and it has been fantastic for her dog to have extra fur friends to play with!

    Just thought I’d share.

We started doing Rover pet sitting in August primarily as a way for my busy teen to make some spending money and to cover her gas/car expenses. Her schedule doesn't allow for a consistent schedule to get a typical part time job. It generally ends up me doing most of the work since I'm home all day but its turned out to be quite profitable for her - just checked and she made almost $1,400 from August-December despite us traveling most of the month of November and rarely taking bookings over the holidays. Any time our calendar is available, we almost always have 1-2 bookings.

As for the experience, we've definitely had some challenging doggos, but we're starting to get more particular about the bookings we take and limiting how long of a stay we'll do unless we've sat for that particular pup before so we don't get stuck with a high maintenance dog for a week. Its been a decent little side hustle for a family of dog lovers.

How do you do a rover profile for your daughter? Do you do it for you and your child does it?

Love that the whole family is into it! Our favorite Rover sitter a family with two older teens. I know their mom helps out but they are just the nicest kids. My dog loves going over there!
