This has been true for years, since they introduced the red card. Even though we shop at Target regularly, I never really saw the need though. We're able to save more by buying discounted gift cards online, including Target cards. I can usually get those for 5-8% off and some of the others at even better discounts.

Yes, I have seen this but I agree with Steve's answer. Most people won't be needing any discount since they get 5-8% usually.

Thank you for taking the time to share the tip. There are several strategies for saving on gift cards (personally I like to buy at a supermarket where I get 6% cash back), and this is definitely one of the useful ones.

Absolutely. Sorry if my post came across as critical. The 5% deal is legit and lots of people use it. It's one of several ways to get 5% or more off at Target. Also, right before Christmas they typically do a special where you can buy up to $300 worth of Target cards for 10% off. We have done that the past 2 years. I bought $300 and I had my mom buy $300 which I paid her for, so we saved $60 on that deal.

My son constantly buys gift cards at discounts, either online or at the grocery store that gives point towards fuel or food. He is always on my case to do the same thing, but up until this year, trying to find the money ahead of time to buy a gift card was not something I could afford, but I seriously need to give this some thought. Last year we were able to knock some big bills down to much lower, such as insurance. Now to work on the smaller things. I know I was able to once buy CVS cards on the AARP site at a 5% discount. Since we spend more there than just about any place other than the grocery store. That would be savings, especially as they keep telling me I am one of the top savers in my state!

One nice thing about doing this is you don't need a lot of money up front. Even if you buy a $5 card, at 5% you save $0.25, or $10 card to save $0.50. And as your cash flow allows, you can buy more cards or higher denominations. You can also sometimes work it so that you buy the card right before you need to spend it so the money isn't tied up for any period of time. We bought a new computer recently. I saved $33 by buying discounted Apple cards online. As soon as I got the codes, which only took a few minutes, I immediately placed the computer order and spent the cards just minutes after buying them. We do the same thing if we are going to a movie. I'll hop on and buy an AMC card, usually 25-30% off, and then print it out and go straight to the theater to use it. All of those little things can really add up over time.

Iw ould love to find CVS gift cards in smaller denominations as they usually come in $25-50-100 amounts. But I have this on my goals/to-do list for this year, to find and use these things. At least I have a coach to help me out.

That's probably true at Target but online you can find smaller ones. I just checked GiftCardGranny.com and they've got one for $2 and one for $20. That inventory changes constantly so you just have to keep checking.
