I'd like to make a little money doing photography on the side, however, I have no formal training in photography. Any thoughts on how best to go about that? Would it be worth doing a free internship at a local photography shop to get started?

I think little training will do a bit better for you. Even your trainer organization may arrange something for you. Your papers will work for getting jobs in print or online media. Overall you would meet people who are like you and onward for a same target.

What type of photography are you talking about? Are you taking artistic photos and selling them? Are you taking photos of people and events like weddings and such? Are you doing photojournalism and trying to get your photos published in the newspaper? I think the type of photography will partly influence the answer to the question.

I mostly take nature and pet photos now, but that's partly because I don't have a studio set up at all for portraits. I feel like that might be where the money is, but I don't want to buy a bunch of equipment if I stink at it or can't find customers.

You might try your local community college or university, even the YMCA for that matter. Our local college has a selection of photography classes for the public that I've thought about attending. The fee is nominal and you never know what you might learn in them or at the very least make friends with the instructor so you can bounce ideas/questions off of them later.

I believe it is a great idea to get a free internship so you get to learn more about photography. Even if you do not get paid, what counts is that the experience that you are gaining.
