I started "making money online" a few months ago and it has been a fun little up and down business that I can run on the side for extra money.
I have a few pieces of advice for any of you who are interested in this.
Wickedfire - I joined the Wickedfire forum to get information from people who are actually making money on the internet. They are a community of internet marketers (IMs) that share stories, help figure out SEO problems, and sell services. You'll learn most of what you need to know by sorting through those threads. The stickies are a good place to start. Don't ask for secrets on there or don't ask to see people's sites. That is a big no-no in those types of communities.
SEO - Learn it. Search Engine Optimization is huge. You won't make money online if you can't get your site to the top of Google. That is where you get your traffic that comes to your site and clicks on your ads or buys your products.
Work - If you really want to make money online, you have to treat this like a job. Set aside 3 hours a day that you are going to site down and write articles, build back links, etc. Don't count researching or reading other blogs as time spent working.
Patience - It takes some time to build traffic to your site and make money. I spent a year before I figured out how this stuff works, before I got my first Google Adsense check. That check was for $250. The next, $450. I'm getting $1,200 at the end of this month. But it took time. I tried this a few years back and I wasn't making money after a few weeks and gave up. Thank God I tried again.
Content - Always be writing. A term you'll see thrown around a lot is "content is king". The more you write, the more pages people have to land on. Also, the more content you have, the more likely Google will be to throw your site to the top of the ranks.
