If you're into directly managing your own real estate, I recommend getting a copy of William Nickerson's How I turned $1,000 into a Million in Real Estate in My Spare Time.

Nickerson got rich in California real estate in the 1980s. The book is worth the read because its loaded with tons of great practical advice on how to build a portfolio of real estate, as well as how to optimize rents and improve your real estate. I think its going for like $21 bucks on Amazon.

I've never read this one, but I have read several others.

There is some definite skill needed to be successful in this field, but there is a lot of "being in the right place at the right time" that has led to many of these peoples' success.

Real estate is the real deal. We bought our first farm with $15,000 down payment for $75,000, it's now worth around $1 mil.
Have kept accumulating investment real estate since this first purchase and are now sitting on somewhere in the neighborhood of $3.5 - 4.0 mil in paid for real estate.
The same real estate reliably spits out pretty nice income we use in retirement and continues to appreciate.
