It's a social-populism with roots in the 19th century that labor unions strongly promoted as a reason for higher and higher wages. Left-wing academics picked up on it and pushed it to an even wider audience.

Drives me nuts when people say crap like this. It is apparently acceptable to steal from people with a lot of money, just not from folks without a lot of money.

Sadly, I know these people. They seem to be everywhere these days.

One woman I know owed almost $900 to her cell carrier before they shut her off. She hadn't paid in months.

So, her rationale for not paying and getting a new carrier?

"I can't even make a phone call without paying them $900. $900 for a PHONE CALL? That is insane! I just got a new plan somewhere else, only $150 per month."

No comments about the 4.5 months she got FREE service because she didn't pay! Or rather, those of us who are diligent in paying out bills paid FOR her.

But honestly, people just don't get money.

I hear even those with college degrees making comments about, "I OWE Uncle Sam this year, he just takes all my money." Or, "I am so lucky, I get money BACK this year."

No thought at all to the fact that THEY determine the amount they owe or get at the end of the year and it is all the same......you either pay monthly or get a bill. That is how it works. You "pay" the same amount in the end.

There's some thrill in not paying your bills on time when there are no consequences.
You've got to try it with your Comcast cable bill; it is a lot of fun.

I accidentally discovered that a few years ago. In fact, I currently have a late cable bill sitting on my desk right now I'll start another thread on it.

What gets me is the people driving these days. Where I live certain people genuinely believe they are entitled to tailgate you if you are not driving at their speed. These same people also have no understanding of what a blinker light is. A bumper sticker that says "What part of my blinker light don't you understand?" would be ideal.

Well, at least 2 things pop into my mind that will make you happy:
                      1. There's some surveys that point to less young drivers because they get their social needs via online and stay a t home.

2.Hopefully soon self driving cars can let us kick back and relax while letting skynet drive us to destinations.

I can't understand how so many people i know making $200k/year can say they can't save and they are broke and can't afford to buy stuff. How can they not?

People elevate their lifestyles and expenses to match their income (and more). So they end up being just as broke making 200K as when they made 150K or 100K or less.

How does that happen? They upgrade from basic cable to premium cable, then to HD with a DVR, then to a smart TV. They went from a flip phone to a smartphone with a data plan. They trade in the Chevy for a Toyota and then for a Mercedes. They go from vacations at the Days Inn to staying at the Marriott. Dinners out at nicer restaurants. Getting their hair done at a private salon instead of Hair Cuttery. In a hundred different ways, they upgrade things without even thinking about it. Before they know it, they're earning 200K and spending 200K.

That's likely true. I look at my neighbors what they drive and i see a lexus and BMW in the driveway. Then a mercedes and Acadia. I see a lot of acadias/yukons/sequoias for large suv. And then luxury cars and these homes. and I know this weekend when I went out I mentioned we don't have cable. No one else didn't have cable or one tv. I didn't think my DH and I were that weird.

From 1993-2000 I was on staff at a hospital here in South Jersey and parked in the doctor parking lot when I made rounds. I was driving a Camry at the time. I routinely had the cheapest car in the parking lot. I was surrounded by Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc. I had the poor man's car.

So Steve, are you not going to elevate your expenditure at all now that you will be making 2-3x more than before? It's not like you have no savings or an empty retirement account...
