  • What's your favorite checking account?

I've had citibank's college checking account for years, which was awesome because there were basically no fees, but now they are moving me to a new account that has all sorts of minimum balances and fees (including a fee for using non-citibank ATMs! BS!). Anyway, I'm looking for a new checking account with very very low fees. What do you use and why?

    Thanks!

I started using ING Direct almost 10 years ago, of course now's it Capital One 360 but nothing has really changed, yet. No fees and no minimums. I've been very happy with the website interface and ease of use when it comes to getting my money into and out of the bank. Of course if you want a B&M bank then 360 is not for you.

I've also been keeping an eye on Ally just in case Capital One starts making drastic changes to 360. Ally is same basic principle, no fees no minimums.

I've been using Capital One 360 for about 5 years myself and have no complaints, though I'm currently in the process of switching to Ally, mostly due to the reimbursement of ATM fees on the rare occasions I do have to take out cash.

Thanks! I like Ally for savings, maybe I"ll check out their checking account too. I was also looking at Charles Schwab which apparently reimburses any ATM fee around the WORLD!

I have mine at a local bank. Free checking, it's earns interest, and there are several branches in the area making it convenient to home and work.

I guess I'm the wrong person to ask. I've had the same checking account for about 25 years. I've never seen any reason to change it. It's free. It has a large ATM network, which used to be important but isn't anymore because they also have a great mobile app and I'm able to do pretty much everything I need to either on my phone or online. And on the rare occasion when I've encountered any type of issue, I've always found their customer service to be excellent. The only downside is it pays no interest but considering how low rates are, that's not that big a deal anyway.

All my accounts are with credit unions. All the checking accounts are free with no costs for calling in and no fees for regular banking and no minimum amounts required.

Surprisingly I've had BofA all my life since a child and have never had an issue with anything. I've never paid a cent in fee's of any kind and my BofA Visa card even gives me cash rewards and no foreign transaction fee's. I know most people hate BofA because of it's size but at the same time being a large bank has it's perks.

I think when people complain about any bank, there is always another side to the story that's not told. They all follow the same "basic" polices.

Same here. My account (referenced above) is also with BoA. I didn't start with them. My bank changed hands 4 times from the time I opened the account until it finally ended up being BoA but I've got no problem with them. Not a penny in fees, very good customer service both in the branches and on the phone, great online and mobile access. I've got nothing to complain about.
