  • WWYD with $5k

Assume you had $5k coming in a bonus at work. What would you do with it? Assume you only owe your mortgage and live a good lifestyle. Only thing is maybe trading in car for a newer used one in the future. My DH is debating what to do with his money and I told him do what he wants.

He has dreams then retreats back into well just save it.

    Divide it Up?

I guess if your Roths are maxed and there's nothing that needs doing, I'd have some fun with it. A trip?

If our only debt was our mortgage and we got an unexpected 5K, I'd probably throw it at the mortgage. If I needed to replace a car, I'd use it for that though.

I'd throw most (all?) of it in my short term savings initially. If I needed it for a car within the next year, then I'd reserve it for that. If not, then I'd parse it out into my accounts as desired.

While I'm not a big traveler, I'd try to find a way to use a chunk of it towards a vacation, or extended weekend. Otherwise I'd personally use most of it for house projects or repairs down the road.

While I don't depend on a bonus for my way of living, to me it's free money. Nothing wrong with saving most of it, but I'd rather put towards something I'd enjoy or normally wouldn't purchase outside my normal spending habits.

Don't need to replace the car we bought it used last year. He talks of getting a 2011 because he likes the style better than 2006. Nope we save in our 401k and IRAs maximum, and 10% taxable accounts and 5% into just annual savings/irregular savings, and college we save IRA maximum. We travel a lot since seeing family is pricey. Just back from 3 weeks to see them.

I don't know. I guess the mortgage but I think he should have fun since it's a true bonus at work for his exceptional work. Someone nominated him and he got an award so it's not an annual bonus. He earned it.

I wouldn't get a newer car, but that's just me. I drive on the inside and don't get to enjoy the outside styling unless I'm looking at it in my driveway or garage.

I'd probably invest it toward a goal I had. If my goal was to pay my mortgage off early, I'd consider that as well.

What's on DH's wish list? Does he have a list of goals awaiting funding? Personally, I'd sweep it into our non retirement Index MF knowing I could cash in for the sum needed to fund a goal within two business days.

                  I'd save it for retirement.

I would buy 22,325 Yellow Peeps Bunnies.

With 4 in a package and 24 packages to a case, for $21.50 per case you could have 22,325 yellow bunnies.

The blue and pink are the same price... Mix it up, live a little...lol.

Does he have a hobby? Maybe he could take flying lessons or learn an instrument.

He wants a tv, but I refused since I don't want to move it and we're moving. I said after we move again.

So it is his money, he earned it, you told him he can do what he wants with it, he wants a TV, and you put the brakes on that? Not for nothing, and I'm not judging here, but why not let him get the TV and have him deal with the TV moving logistics when that time comes?

Really nice dinner out? We've been on a few that are $500-800 and were worth it! Then put the rest into a "tv fund" for after your move!

Because the move is going to be cross country and the movers don't insure or take responsibility for tvs. It'll likely break and be not worth fixing. I have no issues if we were more settled but we aren't.
