  • Potential Move - Financial Impact

    Hi all,

Currently We (myself, wife and son) are located in East coast . Myself making 110K and wife making 70K.

Now issue is , Field i am working has better opportunity on west coast and wife can find job potentially anywhere as she works in IT field.

We have been pondering the decision weather to move to west coast or not. We do have lot of friends here and social life is really cool which may not be the case in West Coast. On another front, we are always worried if something happens to my job here , it would be tough to find another job in East coast (though currently my company is one of the most stable in whole industry i work in) and that would put lot of pressure on that motivates us to move to west coast. But if we move on base of me finding job my wife may have few month break till the time she finds the new job.

Than on another side , we look at our friend circle and social life here on east coast. We do enjoy living here in east coast. Life is good as of now but as i mentioned before , fear of potential job loss keeps us on edge. That is one of the reason, we haven't buy house here on east coast.

We are at the stage, where we have to make decision either way so we can buy home at that place.

    What do you suggest?

If it keeps you on the edge on one coast, it should keep you on edge on the other coast too. You've likely got a network of professional colleagues and friends who could help in finding new employment where you are now. Moving across the country you wouldn't have that immediately - it would take time to rebuild that network of support (both professional and social).

Sounds like this is more of a family discussion/decision than a finance one. If you have a job you can get on the west coast and you're relatively comfortable with your wife getting a job, then your finances should be covered. Your dilemma seems to be in how it will impact your social life and overall happiness, and that really needs to be a family talk, not a forum talk.
