  • Anyone using Mint.com? Question...

    Hey all,

I LOVE mint.com it is great.

Here is the problem I am finding. When I pay for things and get reimbursed. I once booked a weekend cabin for my buddies and I and it was $800 on my credit card. No big deal. But Mint thinks I spent an extra $800 that month. I get paid back, but then it looks like I receieved a lot more income that month for all the reimbursements. This is all fine if these extra payments and reimbursements cancel each other out, but when it comes time for trend reporting in Mint, it sort of throws everything off, when one month has a big spike in both income and spending.

Same thing goes for rent every month. I pay 785, and my g/f pays me back half, yet Mint thinks I'm spending 785 in rent every month.

Anyone has situations like this? Do you just split the transastion (i.e. rent: 785/2 =492.50) and exclude one of the splits from Mint?

What I do is classify the reimbusement as the category I'm being paid for rather than as income. For example, when g/f pays you half of rent, mark it as rent (not income) and then it will show you've only paid your portion.

Regarding the vaca and being reimbursed in a different month, you could leave it as is and do the same as the above knowing your annual spending will balance out or you could could change the date of the initial expense to fall in teh same month as you are reimbursed so your monthly balances out. I definitely wouldn't just exclude it.

Good idea! I'll try this method out. Basically your crediting a spending(debit) account.
