  • Wanted to boast a little today to the forum. . .

I went to get preapproved for a mortgage and they, of course, wanted to pull my credit score and I said, "Okay - on one condition - you tell me what it is." The rep. agreed.

    It was 772.

I have actually not heard of anyone having higher than that. I was actually a little worried it may be down around 700 b/c of 2 late payments 5 years ago on my car that were reported (less than 30 days).

I guess it was so high because I have consumed credit liberally and paid it back (school loans, business LOC, mortgage, auto loans).

Anyway, this is a point in my life I am really glad I have that asset going for me. . .

I found this online but am not sure how accurate it is. Looks like almost a third of the population has a credit score in that range.

        Score : Percentage of Population
        300-499 1%
        500-549 5%
        550-599 7%
        600-649 11%
        650-699 16%
        700-749 20%
        749-799 29%
        800 and higher 11%

That's actually pretty encouraging, if true. That tells me that 60% of the population has a credit score that would probably be considered "GOOD", or at least 700.

            Good for you!

We got ours last month when we applied for our refi. I was 815 and DW was 802. We must all be doing something right.

              DS,

You mean you beat me? Aw, rats. I had to be the best

Yes, amongst all the hubbub of the credit bubble, we do forget that most people do pay their bills on time and are honorable. But the ironic part of all this is despite that fact, our system is built on trust that you will honor obligations.

Shatter trust and you shatter the economic system.

I think what even happens in my business, the rest of the financial world could learn from. Once in awhile I get screwed with a bill to my patietns and then I get all irate and think about locking down my financial polices but then I always stop myself and say, "1% of people are setting 99% of my policy and that ain't good." Every business is in the credit business.

If the above chart is true, and 60% of people are in the 700's. . .with another 27% in the 600's (maybe some problems, but not total deadbeats, I guess), than maybe we don't need financial reform.

I just got mine due to a refi and it was 790. I've been mistakenly late on a couple of payments in the last year or so but never like a month late or anything. Apparently a couple days isn't real significant but I might be wrong. Didn't hurt my score.

Most places don't report your account as delinquent unless you are 30+ days late even though they will ding you for a late fee if your check arrives an hour past closing time.

One was my homeowners ins. and I think the other was my mortgage. I'm usually on top of this stuff but somehow lost track at a busy time. Not late enough to get a late fee but I thought it might have a small impact on my score. I'm sure a credit card company would not have been so forgiving.

There's no justice in this world. Mine 717 and DW 745. Not helping is a couple of old tax liens on mine, one of which I had deleted recently.

Nice job on the credit score. I'm tied with DS, however, at 815.

My wives is around 820 and mine is 740. We only have one credit card and pay if off each week. We are trying to see what the bare minimum is that you can do to get a high credit score without borrowing much.

They said it would be higher if I had a mortgage loan. The house and the mountain land I own are both mortgage free and the spec house we are building will be mortgage free also.
