  • Cold Turkey: Two weeks coffee free!

I had a fairly regular Dunkin Donuts coffee habit, developed after moving to New England where there is an absurd amount of them. I was dropping $2.10 for a large coffee virtually every weekday morning, and maybe a medium or something if I was out and about on the weekend. Not nearly as bad as a $4 latte from Starbucks, but not a cheap habit, or a particularly healthy one either.

Two weeks ago I got really, really sick with some sort of stomach flu. I'm pretty healthy and resilient normally, but this had me totally out of commission for over 18 hours. For the next couple days, I stayed away from harsh food and drink, including coffee, trying to settle down my stomach.

I wasn't really planning on quitting the coffee thing, but the sickness provided an easy way to do it cold turkey the first few days. I was already not feeling great, so the "lack of caffeine" headaches people get when quitting were largely unnoticed!

I figure I've already saved about $20, and I still feel just as alert in the mornings. Decided the first two months of estimated coffee savings will go towards some sort of reward, then after that it will just go to general savings.

That's great. As you said, coffee really isn't very healthy for you, can get expensive, and also stains your teeth. I would recommend an apple in the morning--they actually do a better job of keeping you alert longer during the day, and without crashes or cravings.

I just had to comment on this. When we were in New Hampshire a couple of years ago, the ever-present Dunkin Donuts became a running joke. Look, there's a Dunkin Donuts. Hey, there's another Dunkin Donuts. Gee, I wonder if they have a Dunkin Donuts around here. We were sick of looking at them after 2 weeks.

      Congrats on kicking the habit.

I live in RI, the home of DD, and we have them on every corner. It is a social thing for me. I see the same people at the DD that I go to and they all know I am in Real Estate so it is also good marketing for me.

That was part of the problem. They are like vending machines around here. Within a half mile walk from my apartment, there are 3. Within a one mile radius, there are 7.

Sadly, I don't think you do.

Dunkin' Donuts is an international donut and coffee retailer founded in 1950 in Quincy, Massachusetts by William Rosenberg. It is now headquartered in Canton, Massachusetts.

I don't "claim" MA, but I do have a drivers license and mailing address here. If someone asks me where I am from, I say Georgia.

I usually have a cup or ten of coffee in the morning but I make it at home and believe it is better than anywhere I've bought coffee. If you look at the price for a can of coffee and how many cups it yields then make the comparison to buying it at even a convience store you'll quickly realize how bad you're getting fleeced.

I drink a glass of ice water every morning when I get up. I feel just as alert as can be in the morning. I don't need coffee or tea at all. Then I drink ice water all day.

I would sooner go without air than my morning cup of (homemade) coffee. Sorry, but that is my only real vice (don't drink or smoke or do drugs).

Ah, the wonders of Mint.com. This is probably pretty accurate, as I almost exclusively used my debit card for coffee, not much cash (although I did get a gift card for christmas). Pretty steep drop-off thus far in March

Huge coffee junky here and I live in Dunkin donuts land here as well. Our weekend treat is getting large Dunkin donuts coffee. so good

Otherwise said I drink my homemade coffee and make my hubby a huge mug of coffee for his way to work.

The little things all do add up!!

I lived in Philly for some years where the DD saturation is fairly high as well. They were single-handedly responsible for starting me on my coffee habit. I now french press at home with fancy beans probably averaging $0.75 per 16 oz mug. It's the routine and flavor that I dig.
